[Class 135] A combined automatic safety cut-off and regulator valve has the valve member connected to a pressure responsive diaphragm subject to outlet pressure permanently loaded in the valve closing direction and has valve regulating means operable from the exterior of the casing to adjust the valve member in the valve closing direction. The valve closes with an abnormal drop in outlet pressure and remains closed until all subsidiary valves connected to the outlet conduit have been closed. In the form shown in the Figure the valve member 1 which co-operates with a removable seat 22 is formed on the end of a spindle 7 secured to a diaphragm by a nut 11 engaging a screwed bail on the spindle. The chamber 6a beneath the diaphragm is connected to the inlet conduit by a passage provided with a metering orifice 20 and to the outlet conduit 19a by radial and axial passages in the spindle. The diaphragm is loaded by a spring 4 arranged between a backing plate 10 on the diaphragm and a plate 15 resting against a shoulder 16 on a screwed spindle passing to the outside of the casing where it is fitted with a handwheel 14. An extension on the spindle 12 engages the end of the spindle 7 to limit the compression of the spring and hold the valve a desired distance from the valve seat. In a modification pressure is admitted to the chamber below the valve and the metering orifice is housed in the passage 18. In a further modification the diaphragm itself cooperates with the valve seat.

    • 470,299. Thermally-actuated valves. KEITH & BLACKMAN CO., Ltd., J., and KEITH, G. June 12, 1936, No. 16407. [Class 135] [Also in Groups VIII and XIII] In a gas-iron wherein gas is supplied to a combustion chamber 1b from an inlet connection 19 through a thermostatically-controlled valve 5, 6, hollow handle 2 of Venturi form, and curved pipe 27, the thermostat comprises a tube 3 of high coefficient of expansion and a rod 4 of low coefficient. The rear end of the tube is secured to a spigot 7 on the valve chest 7 slidably mounted in an aperture 7 in the rear wall of the chamber 1b, and the front end of the tube is slidably mounted in an aperture 31 in the front wall. The valve-head 5 is spring biassed to closing position and is provided with a socketed stem 12 which receives one end of the rod 4 which is slidably mounted in the valve seat 6. The other end of the rod is carried in a sleeve 9 and its position therein is adjusted initially by a screw 8 which is then locked in the sleeve by a pinching screw 81 which is normally inaccessible. The sleeve is screwthreaded into the tube 3 and is rotatable therein by an amount slightly less than one revolution so as to vary the operative temperature of the thermostat, the sleeve being provided with a head 9 having a slot 9 . The valve seat 6 is provided with a ring of small apertures 18 which register with a circular groove 17 in the face of the valve head 5 with which groove a byepass aperture 22 communicates. Gas reaches the apertures 18 when the valve is off its seat partly by passing the periphery of the valve and partly through radial ports 20 and an axial bore 21 in the valve stem. As the rod 4 shortens relatively to the tube 3 as the iron heats up so the valve is progressively closed by the spring 14. Specification 360,555 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.

[Classes 78 (iv) and 78 (v)] In street lamp structures of the type in which the lamp is suspended from a gallowsarm on a supporting column and is movable by lowering and hoisting-gear, the lamp is suspended from a carriage which is movable along an inclined track so disposed that the lamp is maintained clear of passing traffic during raising or lowering. The gallows-arm 2, Fig. 1, is supported by an inclined rail 5, the lower end of which is attached directly to the column 3 by a clamp 10. The lower end may, however, be supported by the outer end of a bracket arm attached to the column. The lamp 1 is suspended from a carriage 8 running on the track 5 by a rope 9 attached to a winch 4. This rope passes over fixed guide pulleys 15, 16 to a guide pulley 18 on the carriage 8 which directs it into a tube 19 carried by a casting 20 surmounting the lamp. After passing downwardly through this tube, the rope passes round a pair of pulleys 21, Fig. 7, mounted on the casting 20, and upwardly through a tube 22 to an anchorage 23 on the carriage. The lamp-shipping mechanism is similar to that described in Specification 399,259 and includes a labyrinth-presenting ring 26 mounted on the casting 20 for rotation about an axis parallel to the rail 5 and engageable with pins 27 projecting inwardly from a casing 28 attached to the bend 17 through which gas is supplied from the hollow arm 2. A slot 30, Fig. 7, in the casing 28 is engaged by a projection 29 on the casting 20 to prevent rotation of the latter while the ring 26 is co-operating with the pins 27 in the initial and final operative movements of the winch. In a modification the rail 5 is replaced by a wire rope tensioned between the arm 2 and one end of a cross-bar attached to the column. A similarly tensioned rope connects the other end of the cross-bar to the arm 2. These two ropes may be continuous, or the second rope may be dispensed with and the first rope attached directly to the column 3. In the case of an electric lamp, current supply conductors are led through the arm 2 and bend 17 and connected to terminal spring prongs in the casing 28. There is sliding co-operation between the prongs and a pair of conducting strips insulated from the casting 20 and connected to the lamp.

    • 443,259. Fluid-actuated valves. KEITH & BLACKMAN CO., Ltd., J., and KEITH, G., 27, Farringdon Avenue, Farring- don Street, London. Nov. 22, 1934, No. 33569. [Class 135] An apparatus for effecting proportional delivery of combustible and combustionsupporting media supplied by separate conduits to a consumer, comprises a manually adjustable obturator 7 in the gas conduit, the pressure across which is maintained a function of the rate of flow in the air conduit. This is accomplished by a butterfly valve 5 actuated by a diaphragm 3 subject on one side to the conduit pressure between two valves 5, 7 and on the other to air pressure under the control of a tubular-lift auxiliary valve 15. This valve, which is adapted to seat on one wall of the casing is connected to a pair of diaphragms 13, 14 arranged in a casing to provide four chambers 11, 12, 17 , 18. The chambers 11, 12 are connected by pipes 8, 9 either to pitot tubes in the air conduit 10 or to opposite sides of a throttling disc in that conduit. The chamber 171 is coupled by a pipe 17 to the gas conduit on the downstream side of the obturator 7. The chamber 18 is connected by pipe 19 with the chamber 20 behind the diaphragm 3 and by the tubular valve member with the chamber 11. The tubular valve member may be replaced by an external pipe connection.
