    • A network access arrangement for connecting an end user's computer (10) to the Internet (12) includes a network access server (16) and a proxy server (24). When an end user requests to be connected to the Internet (12), the network access server (12) forwards the access request to the proxy server (24). The proxy server (24) authenticates some requests itself but forwards other requests to authentication servers (A, B or C) for authentication. After receiving a response from one of the servers (A, B, or C), the proxy server (24) forwards the response to the network access server (16). If the proxy server (24) does not receive a response from one of the authentication servers (A, B, or C), it follows a default procedure. This can be to authenticate the request in the proxy server (24) or simply to accept the request. The proxy server (24) has a counter associated with each of the servers (A, B or C). Each time the proxy server (24) receives a response from one of the servers (A, B or C), it decrements the appropriate counter. Each time it does not receive a response, it increments the appropriate counter. When one of the counters reaches a threshold value, the proxy server (24) then follows the default procedure for a pre-set number of requests which would normally be forwarded to the appropriate server. After following the default procedure for this predetermined number of access requests, the proxy server (24) forwards the next access requests, which would normally be forwarded to the relevant server, to that server.

    • A control device (10) for controlling the time sequence activation of a wall mounted toggle switch is mounted directly to the toggle switch cover plate. The device (10) is then programmed to turn the switch on and off in accordance with the programmed entry instructions. A sliding plate (26) within the device (10) contacts and moves the toggle (28) into its on and off position in accordance with the program. The housing (12, 14, 16) of the device (10) defines an opening large enough for the toggle (28) to be manually manipulated without removal of any components of the device (10).

    • The invention relates to a drilling apparatus (10) for soil sampling and to support and collection apparatuses for use with the drilling apparatus (10). The drilling apparatus (10) comprises a rotary drive assembly (13) with a cutter assembly (15) connected thereto. The cutter assembly (15), housed within the outer casing (32) of the drilling apparatus (10), comprises outer (24) and inner (19) assemblies that can move independently of each other. The cutter assembly (15) has concave peripheral cutting edges (16, 18). The support apparatus (121) enables a drill string to be extended whereby one end (122) of the support is removably attached to a drill extension assembly (110) and the other end is removably attached to the drill string. Removal of the support (121) enables the extension assembly (110) to be attached to the drill string. The collection apparatus for collecting drill cuttings comprises a tubular body (213) of two opposed removable complementary members each of substantially semi-circular cross section. End caps (220) are provided for the tubular body (213) when it is assembled.
