    • An adapter (20) for use with a low volume PUF sampler is described. The adapter (20) is affixed over the open end of a PUF (polyurethane foam) sample cartridge (10). Sample tubing (35) is affixed to an aperture (27) in the adapter (20), and the free end of the sample tubing (35) is then positioned at a desired sample location such as within an aircraft interior. As a vacuum is applied to the PUF cartridge (10), the adapter (20) allows air collected at the sample point (50) to pass through the tubing (30) and through the interior of the PUF cartridge (10) while preventing air surrounding the PUF cartridge (10) from being drawn into the PUF cartridge (10) except through the sample tubing (35). In this manner the sample point (50) of a desired air sample can be selected at a point remote from the PUF cartridge (10). Additionally, use of multiple PUF cartridges (10) and adapters (20) allow the simultaneous collection of separate air samples.

    • A process for preparing complex-shaped, ceramic-metal composite articles, comprising: (a) contacting a non-wettable powder that is non-wetting to a metal to be used for infiltration with a shaped ceramic body to form a layer of the non-wettable powder on one or more surfaces of the shaped ceramic body, wherein the shaped ceramic body has a region where there is no layer of the non-wettable powder, and (b) infiltration the shaped ceramic body with the metal through the region or regions where there is no layer of the non-wettable powder, such that a complex-shaped ceramic-metal composite comprising one or more metal phases and one or more ceramic phases is formed, wherein the article has substantially the net shape of the shaped ceramic body and undesirable regions of excess metal on the surface and undesirable phases within the complex-shaped ceramic-metal composite article near the surface are located only in the region or regions where there is no layer of the non-wettable powder. The process of the invention allows the preparation of complex-shaped ceramic-metal composite articles with undesirable regions of excess metal and undesirable phases on the surface(s), of, or within, the article only in the regions where there is, or was, no layer of non-wettable powder. The process of the invention allows the preparation of a complex-shaped ceramic-metal composite article which requires little or no machining of the surface(s) to achieve a finished article. A complex-shaped ceramic-metal composite article is prepared which contains few undesirable regions of excess metal and undesirable phases.

    • Articles of apparel include: (a) a garment structure having one or more fabric elements structured and arranged to provide a close fit to at least one predetermined portion of a body (e.g., area(s) of the body for which enhanced position sensing and/or feedback are desired, such as the lower back, the arch of the foot, etc.); and (b) a body position feedback system engaged with or integrally formed as part of the garment structure. The body position feedback system may apply higher tensile or constricting (compressive) forces to selected portions of the wearer's body, which can help stimulate or interact with nerves and deep tissue receptors located in various portions of the body. The increased forces at selected locations of the body give the wearer sensory feedback regarding the position or orientation of these parts of the body and can improve or accelerate development of "muscle memory."
