    • Methods and apparatus for convective heat treatment of thin glass sheets (17) are provided. The glass sheets (17) are held in a fixture (9) which has a processing volume (19) which has an open top and an open bottom. A bottom support system (15) supports the bottom edges of the glass sheets (17) without blocking a substantial portion of the processing volume's open bottom. A side support system (13) holds the vertical edge regions of the glass sheets during the convective heat treatment, thus reducing vibration and distortion (warp) of the sheets as a result of the heat treatment. The side support system (13) can include vertical members (33) having arms (37) that can include lips (73) for engaging the major surfaces of the glass sheets (17).

    • An optical interrogation system is described herein that can interrogate a label-independent-detection (LID) biosensor and monitor a biological event on top of the biosensor without suffering from problematical parasitic reflections and/or problematical pixelation effects. In one embodiment, the optical interrogation system is capable of interrogating a biosensor and using a low pass filter algorithm to digitally remove problematic parasitic reflections contained in the spectrum of an optical resonance which makes it easier to determine whether or not a biological event occurred on the biosensor. In another embodiment, the optical interrogation system is capable of interrogating a biosensor and using an oversampling/smoothing algorithm to reduce oscillations in the estimated location of an optical resonance caused by the problematical pixelation effect which makes it easier to determine whether or not a biological event occurred on the biosensor.

    • A fluid handling system for transferring fluids is disclosed. The fluid handling system incorporates a plurality of transfer units for dispensing and/or collecting fluids as part of a closed analytical system. The plurality of transfer units are capable of functioning independently and/or collectively when assembled in a unitary array format. Methods of making and using the fluid handling system are also disclosed. The fluid handling system allows a sub-array of transfer units to shift in a vertical direction independent from a position of another sub-array of transfer units that are assembled within the same fluid head. Therefore, the fluid handling system facilitates multi-port fluid delivery and collection in an array format. Further, the fluid handling system aligned with a sensing surface enables label-free detection assays to be performed in an analytical system.
