摘要： In a franking system, a postal security device (PSD) is used to account for postage dispensation, and generate digital signatures for inclusion in postage indicia to authenticate same. In accordance with the invention, the PSD includes multiple crypto processors which participate in franking transactions and generate the digital signatures in a multiplexed manner. Each crypto processor verifies the accounting of postage dispensation leading to and including the transactions in which the crypto processor participates. In addition, the crypto processors re-create transaction records and store them therein in a distributed manner.

Funds corresponding to the total value are requested from a secure source (24). An authorization to provide the indicia (26) is received from the secure source (24). The indicia (26) may contain encrypted data, o r consecutive numbers, which may be part of the encrypted data. The encrypted data may be in the form of a two dimensional bar code. The information may b e recovered from the indicia (26) by, for example, scanning. Authenticity of t he indicia (26) may be verified by accessing a database to determine if the unique indicia (26) has previously been received and at least some of the information it contains entered into the database.

Each record (301, 303, 305, 307, 309) includes at least the postage dispensed (305) in the associated franking transaction, and an ascending register value (307) indicating the cumulative postage dispensed. Using the received records (301, 303, 305, 307, 309), the data center (503, 803) assesses the charges during the period and causes assessed charges to b e charged to an account associated with the franking system (100, 505-1, 505-2 , 505-n). In addition, the data center (503, 803) forwards a copy of the received records (301, 303, 305, 307, 309) to another system (507, 550, 565, 850, 865) for storage, which may be used by the postal authority or utility to audit the charges.

An authorization code, which is particular to the system, is used to verify the system configuration. An unauthorized change in the system configuration causes invalidation of the code and generation of the postal indicia is denied. Data center (125) records configuration information of ea ch franking system (100). The data center generates a valid authorization code for verification in the franking system based on new configuration information. Components added to the system must be preapproved to prevent fraudulent generation of postage indicia. A registration identifier is assigned to each preapproved component which is necessary for interaction wi th the franking system.
