    • In the extraction of clays, kaolins and other siliceous aluminiferous materials with aqueous sulphurous acid, the treatment is effected by the application of external heat at a temperature of from 40 DEG to 90 DEG C., and extraction is effected at any temperature within this range, and at any concentration of sulphurous acid until the amount of alumina in solution approaches the amount where decomposition of the resulting aluminium sulphite would begin to take place. The alumina content of the solution increases with time to a maximum and, if extraction were continued, would thereafter decrease. The sulphurous acid may be added in proportion as it is consumed, or the total amount may be added at the outset of the process, in which case, sealed pressure vessels are employed. It may be used in excess and as a supersaturated solution. Pressures specified vary from atmospheric to 12 atmos. The clays &c., are preferably first calcined, e.g. at 600 DEG C. and ground. Extraction is effected with moderate stirring. The solution obtained, after separation from silica, is heated, for example by direct treatment with steam, until the escape of sulphur dioxide ceases. Basic aluminium sulphite separates uncontaminated with iron, and is filtered off out of contact with air. Drawings show the effect of temperature on the decomposibility of the aluminium sulphite solutions, and also the alumina content of the solution for increasing periods of extraction and for different concentrations of sulphurous acid. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the extraction of the materials with weak acids such as acetic and formic acids. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
