    • The suction device includes a pneumatic cylinder and a hollow piston in the cylinder movable between a retracted and a nonretracted position and comprised of axially adjacent first and second portions, at least a part of the circumferential periphery of each of the two portions being spaced from and out of contact with the inner periphery of the cylinder to define therewith respective first and second spaces. The piston unit includes a sheet-engaging portion having a suction opening which communicates with the ambient atmosphere and constitutes the end of the hollow interior of the piston unit, the hollow interior communicating with the second space via the first space. The cylinder is provided with a suction port opening into the second space to form a path for the flow of ambient air into the suction opening and out through the suction port, the flow cross section of the first space being smaller than that of the second space so that the first space constitutes a flow restriction in such path.

    • Gripper devices, positioned on a transfer cylinder are arranged to release the sheet front edge either as the sheet front edge is tangent with the adjacent perfecting cylinder for printing on the same side of the sheet or when the sheet trailing edge is tangent to the perfecting cylinder for reversing the sheet and printing on both sides of the sheet. The gripper devices are opened by a cam mounted on a semicircular cam adjusting gear segment, and the gear segment is, in turn, mounted coaxially with the transfer cylinder shaft. A second gear meshes with the cam adjusting gear segment and is supported on a cam adjusting shaft journaled in the press frame. Rotation of the cam adjusting shaft rotates the cam adjusting gear segment and the cam mounted thereon relative to the axis of the transfer cylinder to change the location at which the grippers on the transfer cylinder open to release the front edge of the sheet. A locking gear segment is pivotally connected to the press side frame and is moved into meshing relation with the cam adjusting gear segment by an eccentric locking shaft to maintain the cam adjusting gear segment in a preselected angular position relative to the axis of the transfer cylinder.

    • There is disclosed a vacuum table 400 comprising a vacuum plate 402 separating a first vacuum chamber 406 from a substrate zone 60 for receiving a substrate 50. The vacuum plate has a plurality of suction holes 404 for conveying a gas flow from the substrate zone 60 to the first vacuum chamber 406. There is an evacuation port 422 in communication with a second vacuum chamber 420 to evacuate gas from the substrate zone 60 when a substrate 50 is received over the suction holes 404 of the vacuum plate 402, and a vacuum port 424 for discharging gas received in the second vacuum chamber 420 to a vacuum source 423. The first vacuum chamber 406 and the second vacuum chamber 420 are in fluid communication via a valve 430 so that gas flows from the first vacuum chamber 406 to the vacuum port 424 via the second vacuum chamber 420. The valve 430 is controllable to vary a gas flow rate through the vacuum plate 402 and thereby vary a retaining force on a substrate 50 received thereon.

    • The impression cylinder (2), which together with the cylinder (1) that prints the image, forms the printing nip, co-operates with two transfer cylinders (3, 4) which feed or remove the sheets, and has an essentially closed cylindrical circumferential surface, into which, at the beginning of each impression segment, a suction strip (5, 6) is inset to apply suction to the front edge of a sheet. The two transfer cylinders (3, 4) are similarly provided with suction strips (7, 8; 13, 14) which are arranged in good register with the suction strips (5, 6) of the impression cylinder (2), and moreover have dipping grippers (10, 12; 16, 18), which are located in gaps in the dipping strips. Sheet transfer to and from the impression cylinder (2) is effected by alternately switching on and off the suction air at the relevant suction strips. As they pass the printing nip, the dipping grippers of the transfer cylinders occupy their lowered position, whilst away from the printing nip, they occupy their raised position, in order to hold the sheets while e suction air of the relevant suction strip is switched off.

The shutter member moves to the closed position to close the air passage opening portion of the passage block by an air suction force and a magnetic attraction force between the shutter member and the magnetic member when the suction operation of the small-size object is performed.
