    • An electrical charge transfer apparatus is described for transferring charge from one phase to another phase of a multiphase power line carrying an AC signal having a period of TAC. The apparatus employs a capacitive storage circuit and a plurality of charging circuits, each of which is arranged to couple a different phase of the multiphase AC power line to the capacitive storage circuit and to thereby transfer charge from that phase to the storage circuit, Each of the plurality of charging circuits includes a unidirectional switch and an inductor, and is adapted when coupled to the capacitive storage circuit to form a corresponding resonant circuit having a resonant frequency of 1/Ti, where i is an index identifying the charging circuit and wherein the various Ti are all less than TAC. A plurality of injection circuits are also provided, each of which is arranged to couple the capacitive storage circuit to a different one of the phases of the multiphase power line, thereby to inject charge from the capacitive storage circuit into the phase to which it is coupled. Each of these injection circuits comprising an inductor and a unidirectional switch. A control circuit is arranged to operate the unidirectional switches of the plurality of charging circuits to produce a sequence of resonant charging cycles that transfer charge from one phase to the capacitive storage unit, and is also arranged to operate the unidirectional switches of the plurality of injecting circuits to transfer charge from the capacitive storage unit to another phase.
