    • The disclosure describes a surge protection device that makes use of metal oxide varistors (MOVs) to limit the magnitude of electrical surges in single phase or multi-phase power distribution networks. Since MOVs generally fail in a low impedance mode when the electrical ratings of the devices are exceeded, current limiting and thermal limiting devices are connected in series with the MOVs to limit the effect of these failures to the surge protection devices. The physical configuration of the surge protection device limits the effects of a current limiter being activated by providing a barrier between the current limiter and the associated MOV. Filler material is also used to limit the effects of debris or plasma gas from an activated current limiter. Multiple surge protection devices may be connected in parallel to provide increased current handling capability, and visual indication of a failed surge protection device may be provided.

    • A protection device for an electrical component that has a protective housing and a terminal cap. The protective housing has a base with a contact hole therethrough for accommodating an electrical terminal pin. A projecting perimeter wall extends from the base. Attached to the perimeter wall is an inwardly extending tapered rib. Each rib is tapered such that the end of each rib closest to the base surface extends from the perimeter wall further than the end of the rib furthest from the base surface. A terminal cap is placed within the perimeter wall and forced toward the base surface until the tapered ribs engage and are deformed by the terminal cap to provide an interference fit between the ribs and the terminal cap. A method of assembling a battery and an electrical component with such a protection device is also disclosed.

    • A redundant electric fuse circuit is provided that includes a plurality of fuses coupled in series and each having a fuse control device operable for generating a current through each fuse sufficient to blow the fuse. A first fuse control signal is activated to generate a sufficient current through one of the fuses to blow the fuse. A second fuse control signal is activated to generate a sufficient current through the other fuse to blow that fuse. The electric fuse circuit provides redundancy thereby increasing the yield of integrated circuits by reducing the probability that a defective fuse (i.e., a fuse that reforms after blowing) will cause a fatal defect in the integrated circuit.

    • A temperature control circuit provides for optical isolation, dry start protection, dedicated load control, manual reset, and relay control in hot water heaters and related applications. The control circuit removes power from a load at a first temperature, and includes a first optical isolation device, a first diode temperature sensor, and a first switching mechanism. The first optical isolation device controls operation of a power source, where the power source is provided to the load, such as a hot water heater heating element. The first diode temperature sensor is biased to provide a switching signal at the first temperature. The first switching mechanism is disposed between the first diode temperature sensor and the first optical isolation device, where the first switching mechanism disengages operation of the first optical isolation device in response to the switching signal. The control circuit can further include a high limit cycling circuit for disengaging operation of the power source at the second temperature. A latching circuit can be used to maintain the temperature control circuit in a switched state until a manual reset occurs.

    • A thermosensitive wire (15), including a pair of phosphor bronze round wires which cause a short-circuit when the ambient temperature exceeds a predetermined temperature, is laid along an induction line (14), and a protective device (25) including a DC power supply unit (33) for applying a DC voltage and a meter relay (35) for detecting that the thermosensitive wire (15) has caused a short-circuit is provided on both ends of the thermosensitive wire (15). An alarm output (35A) of the meter relay (35) is outputted to a high-frequency generating circuit (24) so as to shut down a high-frequency current to be supplied to the induction line (14). With this structure, even when a metal such as a tool made of iron is erroneously set near the induction line (14), the heating thereof may be detected by using the thermosensitive wire (15) and the high-frequency current flowing through the induction line (14) may be shut down. Thus, fire accidents such that the induction line (14) is heated and burnt by further heating may be prevented.

    • If an excess current is detected after the current in the secondary circuit of an induction generator-motor has exceeded a preset value, it is determined that a fault has occurred in the transmission line, provided that the current at the neutral point of a main transformer has exceeded a preset value. In this case, the operation of the induction generator-motor is continued. If no excess current is detected, it is determined that a fault has occurred in the secondary circuit of the induction generator-motor, provided that the current at the neutral point of the main transformer has not exceeded the preset value. In this case, the operation of the induction generator-motor is stopped.

    • A safety circuit system for a DC driven device for use with a fluid delivery system includes a first voltage potential DC power line, a second voltage potential DC power line, a controller and a safety circuit. The first voltage potential DC power line is coupled to provide a first voltage potential to the DC driven device, and the second voltage potential DC power line is coupled to provide a second voltage potential to the DC driven device such that the second voltage potential is different relative to the first potential. The controller controls at least the first voltage potential on the first voltage potential DC power line. The safety circuit has an enable state and a disable state, in which the default state is the disable state. The safety circuit is coupled to the controller, and the controller controls the safety circuit to place the safety circuit in the enable state independently of controlling the first voltage potential on the first voltage potential DC power line. The safety circuit is operatively coupled to at least one of the first and second voltage potential DC power lines to inhibit DC flow and operation of the DC driven device when the safety circuit is in the disable state and to permit DC flow and operation of the DC driven device when the safety circuit is in the enable state such that the operation of the DC driven device will occur when the safety circuit is in the enable state. In one version the DC driven device is a DC motor in an infusion pump, while in other versions the DC driven device is a gas generator in an infusion pump. Preferably, the safety circuit is controlled by an AC signal from the controller such that the safety circuit is enabled by the AC signal to permit DC flow and enable the forward motion of the DC motor while the AC signal is provided by the controller.
