    • An arc-fault detecting circuit-breaker system is operable with a protected electrical circuit that operates with direct current or alternating current. A normally closed line circuit breaker has an electrical input and an electrical output, and an electrical line connects the electrical output to the protected-element input. The system includes a detector of the rate of change with time of a current flow in the electrical line. An activating element alternating current voltage source has an alternating current output. A circuit-breaker activating element is operable responsive to the detector. The circuit-breaker activating element is electrically connected between the electrical line and the alternating current output. The circuit breaker activating element is a normally open switch that closes to establish a connection between the electrical line and the alternating current output in the event that the detector detects a rate of change of current with time in excess of a permitted maximum rate-of-change value.

    • A Vplex polling loop device is disclosed which can automatically detect and isolate shorted or overloaded sections of a polling loop, before or after polling loop power and signaling is switched to the output of the device, permitting normal operation of the remaining portion of the polling loop. The Vplex short and overload isolator (VSOI) is usable on former, existing, and future polling loop systems without the need for any software or hardware changes to the associated controls, and may also be used on 2-wire DC voltage distribution systems within the voltage and current limits of the VSOI. It is capable of multiple use anywhere on a polling loop while requiring minimum power from the polling loop. Finally, in the process of detecting and isolating a short or overload on its output, it prevents that short or overload from causing other VSOI devices on the loop to erroneously disconnect their protective branches of the loop.

    • A GFCI mis-wiring detector includes a set of input terminals for an AC source, and a set of output terminals for an AC load. The set of output terminals are conductively connected to the set of input terminals. A GFCI circuit has one or more switches that selectively interrupt the connection between the set of input terminals and the set of output terminals when a ground fault occurs. A mis-wiring detection circuit causes the one or more switches of the GFCI circuit to open when the AC source is electrically coupled to the set of output terminals for a first time interval, even if there is no imbalance in the current flow. Additionally, a suppression circuit suppresses operation of the mis-wiring detection circuit when the AC source is electrically coupled to the input terminals for a second time interval. The second time interval is less than the first time interval.

    • A fail open circuit that includes a controllable switch coupling a power source to a load. Control circuitry is provided that determines if the switch is in the proper conduction state based on a switch control signal and a signal indicative of power delivered to the load. If the switch is determined as improperly closed (conducting), the control circuitry diverts energy delivered to the load through fuse circuitry, thereby blowing a fuse and decoupling the load from the power source. In preferred embodiments, logic circuitry determines the relative states of the control switch and the load and generates a control signal to divert energy away from the load and blow a fuse.
