    • The armature of an automotive starter motor has a protective collar for its commutator. The collar has an annular disc body that is bonded to the rear wall of the commutator, and it has a projecting rim which overlays the marginal free ends of the bars of the commutator so as to restrain them from a tendency to peel or lift away under the strong forces developed as the armature is rotated in cranking a motor vehicle engine. The body of the collar also has a rearwardly extending hub provided with grease-filled cavities, whereby the hub serves as a lubricated thrust washer and spacer for the armature relative to the end frame of the starter's housing, as the armature rotates.

    • A slip ring assembly comprises an insulating body having a pair of slip rings on its external surface, each slip ring having electrically connected thereto a respective connector element a part of which is disposed radially inwardly of the slip rings. The body has an internal bore which receives a shaft of a rotary electric machine in use, a side wall of the bore being provided with axially extending recesses which are disposed radially inwardly of the connector element parts respectively. The presence of these recesses, which may alternatively be of helical or annular configuration, ensures that the connector elements do not contact the aforementioned shaft in operation and thereby create a short-circuit. The slip ring assembly is produced by placing the rings and the connector elements in an annular mould cavity whose radially inner surface has projections thereon which correspond to the desired configuration of the recesses in the completed assembly.

    • A commutator for electrical machines and a method of manufacture of the commutator is disclosed which consists of a lamination assembly held together by a pair of shrink-rings. One of the rings serves to support the commutator on a commutator hub and comprises first and second ring portions having between them a decoupling portion. The first ring portion is in the form of a shrink-ring and holds together the lamination assembly. The second ring portion is secured to the commutator hub. The other shrink-ring also holds together the lamination assembly. In the method of manufacture of the commutator, both the first and second ring portions are simultaneously shrunk on to the lamination assembly and commutator hub respectively.

Dabei ist vorgesehen, dass die Rotorwelle einstückig durch Umformen mittels Streckdrücken aus einem rohr- oder rondenförmigen Ausgangskörper gebildet ist, wobei die Stromzuleitungen (10) wenigstens im Bereich des Lagersitzes (7) im Hohlraum (6) des Wellenzapfens (5) angeordnet und in einen rohrförmigen Mantel (12) aus Kunststoff eingebettet sind, der einstückig an die Innenumfangsfläche des Wellenzapfens (5) angespritzt ist, wobei der rohrförmige Mantel (12) aus Kunststoff mit den eingebetteten Stromzuleitungen (10) sich über das freie Ende des Wellenzapfens (5) axial nach außen in einen freien Endbereich (12a) erstreckt und die Schleifkontakte (11) in den rohrförmigen Mantel (12) eingebettet und am Außenumfang des freien Endbereiches (12a) angeordnet sind.

    • Face commutators (30) with substantially planar commutating segments (31) that are bonded to a conductive member (33) which is attached to an insulating hub (41). The hub (41) has an axial bore (43) designed to be press-fitted on the armature shaft (23) of a motor with an inner wall section (43) that is deformed by the motor shaft (23). The hub (41) is configured with an inner wall section that has contact sections (46) and relieft sections (47), wherein the contact sections are closer to the central axis of the hub than the radius of the shaft and which are deformed when the hub is pressed on the shaft. While the relief sections (47), which do not come in contact with the shaft, allow the commutator to adapt to the shaft and provide room for material that is displaced from the contact sections. The hub (41) and, to a limited extent, the metallic conductive elements (33), absord any stresses and deformation from press-fitting the hub onto the motor shaft without transmitting undue stress and deformation to the interface betweenthe conductive elements and the carbon communtating segments (31).
