    • 1377902 Cathode for cell with organic electrolyte P R MALLORY & CO Inc 15 March 1973 [29 March 1972] 12629/73 Heading H1B The cathode is selected from the phosphates and arsenates of Cu, Ag, Fe, Co, Ni, Hg, Tl, Pb and Bi and mixtures thereof. The anode is selected from Li, Na, K, Be, Ca, Mg, Al, Rb, Cs, Ba and Sr and alloys thereof. Preferably, the anode surface is amalgamated. The electrolyte comprises a polar organic solvent having dissolved therein an ion-forming metallic salt. In the cell of Fig. 1, the cathode mix 12 comprises a compressed and bonded mixture of the selected phosphate or arsenate, graphite and P.T.F.E. The separator 14 is of fibre glass, the anode 22 is of lithium and the electrolyte is absorbed in a body 24 of cotton. The electrolyte comprises lithium perchlorate dissolved in propylene carbonate. A stainless steel container 10 is sealed by a grommet 20 to a double cover 16, 18 of stainless steel. In the cell of Figs. 4, 5, the cathode 50 includes a nickel current-collector screen covered on both sides with the cathode mix and having a tab 55. A layer of filter paper 62 is interposed between the cathode 50 and a pair of anodes 60 formed by pressing two lithium sheets on to a stainless steel screen having a tab 65. An enclosure 67 of a polymer and foil-laminate film is sealed at 68, 69 after filling with a solution of LiClO 4 in tetrahydrofuran.

Figs. 2, 3, a housing 20 of ceramic or fibreglass having an aperture 24 through which is sealed the insulating sleeve 28 of a conductor wire 26 secured to a screen 27 preferably of nickel. The anode 12a consists of lithium optionally doped with magnesium and/or calcium and is in the form of a thin disc 30 and a thicker disc 31 which are pressed on to opposite sides of the screen 27. The layer 16a comprises a complex of iodine and an ionexchange or non-ion-exchange resin. Example of ion-exchange resin is polyvinylpyridine and examples of non-ion-exchange resins are pyrene and polyvinylpyrene. The organic iodine complex layer 16a is poured in tar form into the cavity 21 after insertion of the anode 12a to a level slightly above the ridge 23. A barrier layer 17a comprises a fibreglass film coated with ion-exchange resins or salts, i.e. rubidium iodide, cesium iodide and/or tetramethyl ammonium iodide. An iodine reservoir layer 18a comprises a mixture of iodine and carbon. Layer 18a maintains the necessary iodine level in the layer 16a during the cell discharge. The cathode plate 13a is of a metal selected from stainless steel, stainless steel and nickel compound, nickel, titanium, gold, molybdenum, or gold and molybdenum compound. The plate 13a is retained by a contact plate 33 secured by adhesive 32. The housing 20 may be encapsulated in a rubberized implantation unit such as a pacemaker or in a stainless steel housing. In a double-cell embodiment described with reference to Figs. 6-10 (not shown) a common anode is centrally disposed and has arranged on either side a cathode structure. To improve contact between the several cell layers the housing end plates have leaf springs on their inner sides and the outwardly-facing surfaces of the reservoir layers are contacted by stainless steel fibre layers.

    • 1396901 Dry cell casing UNION CARBIDE CORP 8 Aug 1972 [9 Aug 1971] 37030/72 Heading H1B A resealable venting means for a dry cell comprises a resilient cover 20 having an annular flange 26 bearing on the rounded over upper portion 28 of cell container 10. As shown cover 20 has a further flange 22 forming a close fit with carbon cathode collector rod 14 and an intermediate annular projecting portion 24 has a circumferential notch 30 engaged by the rim of container 10 but permitting gas accumulating in 18 to pass and be vented by the flapper valve constituted by flange 26 and the rounded container surface. Cover 20 is held in place by metal cap 36 secured to the cell jacket 34, the arrangement permitting escape of the vented gases. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the engaging surfaces of the container and notch 30 may be sealed with grease, passages being provided through cover 20 to the venting means, or non-sealed regions being left. A liquid-absorbing washer may be provided in space 18 to trap electrolyte (Fig. 5, not shown). Container 20, e.g. of zinc, may have a shrunkon film tubing applied thereto.

These apertures may be circular or rectangular and may be supplemented by slots cut in the edge of the skirt. The base 2 and a cover 4, which are provided with cavities 6, 7 for the accumulation of gas, may be formed of high pressure polyethylene which is permeable to gas but impermeable to liquids. An essential part of the cell is the gas and liquid impermeable coating 3 covering the entire cylindrical part of the cell. This may be formed of low pressure polyethylene and heat-sealed to the cover and base. A base contact cap 5 is provided to make contact with an exposed portion of the skirt of the cylindrical electrode 1.
