Apparatus for laterally aligning a railway track comprises potentiometric means for measuring the curvature to produce an error signal which is fed to hydraulic rams controlling the aligning tools, the applied force being proportional to the error signal. The track curvature is represented by the angle between a long taut wire 6 Fig.3 extending between a front truck 8 and rear truck 10 mounted on a bogie frame and two short wires 7, 7' extending between a central tool truck 4 and each of the trucks 8, 10, only the rear short wire, e. g. 7, being used for a given direction of travel, its displacement from parallelolism with wire 6 being measured by a rotary potentiometer 19 Fig. 4 on a truck 9 intermediate between trucks 4 , 10. The potentiometer slider is positioned by a motor 21 associated with a follow-up switch 20 straddling wire 6. When the bogie is located on a curved portion of the track the follow-up switch 20 energizes motor 21 to rotate a spindle 18 carrying the switch 20 and potentiometer 19. The consequent displacement of the potentiometer slider feeds a measuring signal to a meter 31 in opposition to a reference signal from pre-set potentiometer 33, the difference being fed via amplifier 34 to hydraulic servo-valve 17 controlling the pressure developed by rams 11 of track aligning tools 4. The rams may be used independently of the measuring system by operating switch 38. In an alternative arrangement Fig. 6, a single taut wire 44 is attached at its centre to the tool truck 4' and the wire ends are slidable laterally on the front and rear trucks 8, 10. Rotary potentiometers 47, 48 mounted on the tool truck 4 and on the intermediate truck 9 are attached to the wire 44 to measure the curvature of the bogie and the potentiometer slider signals are combined in a desired ratio to energize the rams of the track aligning tools.
