    • A porous sintered aggregate consists of a sintered product of a raw mixture comprising 1) a material the main components of which are carbon and the oxides of Si, Al, Fe and Ca in proportions: Si0 2 : 35-70 per cent; Al 2 O 3 : 15-35 per cent; Fe(calculated as Fe 2 O 3 ): 3-30 per cent; CaO: 1-10 per cent; and C: 1-15 per cent; and 2) fine calcareous material. The composition of the raw mixture is such that the weight ratio of total CaO over total Al 2 O 3 in the mixture lies within the range 0.35 - 1.00, the weight ratio of total Si0 2 over total CaO is greater than 1.5, and the weight ratio of total SiO 2 over total Al 2 O 3 is greater than 1.0. A process for manufacture of such a product is described.
