    • An aerial assembly comprises a first unit (30) connected to an aerial (34) and mounted on the exterior of a vehicle windscreen (32). A second unit (42) is mounted on the interior of the windscreen (32) in an opposed relationship to the unit (30) and the two units are non-conductively coupled in such a way that, in use, signals received by the aerial (34) are conveyed from the unit (30) to the unit (42) across the intervening, non-conductive windscreen (32) (or the signals may pass in the opposite direction). The assembly includes signal amplification means (36) operable to amplify signals from the aerial (34) prior to their non-conductive transfer from the first unit (30) to the second unit (42). The first unit (30) may include or be connected to its own power source so that it can be retrofitted to systems which use conventional interior units, or the internal unit (42). An external unit (54) may include a non-conductive power coupling by which the internal unit (42) transmits power, derived from a source within the vehicle, to a pick up in the external unit (30).

The surge suppressor protects hardware devices from electrical surges by isolating the radio frequency from an inner conductor. The surge suppressor includes a housing (220), an inner conductor (215), a surge blocking device (250), and a spiral inductor (230). The surge blocking device (250) is inserted in series with the hardware devices for blocking the flow of electrical energy therethrough. The spiral inductor (230) is coupled to the surge blocking device (250) and is shunted to ground for discharging the electrical surge.

    • A new and improved antenna-transmission line coupling system is provided wherein the electro-magnetic oscillations in the antenna are prevented from entering the circuitry which couples the antenna to its transmission line. The coupling structure (called coupler) includes an impedance matching transformer (34) and a capacitor (42) connected to the transformer (34) and capacitively coupled with the antenna element (B). Various means (58) are provided for varying the capacitive coupling with the antenna element (B). Antenna elements having capacitor plates (46, 52) on their ends are disclosed; as well as an arrangement wherein a universal coupler having a broad band impedance matching transformer can be used with any number of antenna elements each tailored for a different commercial RF frequency band.

    • Antennae are known, which are mounted against a window of a vehicle such as to include an antenna rod (6) fastened to an electrically conductive base (1) mounted on the outside of the window, and a connection member on the inside of the window directly opposite the base, and in coaction therewith. An antenna lead from the vehicle's radio or communication apparatus is connected to the connection member, which comprises a box (8) with an earth plane and is mounted on the window with an opposing plane (12). The improvement provided by the invention resides in that the connection conductor (13) between the opposing plane (12) and the antenna lead (15) is a conductor having an electrical length which is in principle 1/4 + n x 1/2 times the wavelength of the desired transceiver frequency, or the wavelength at some point within a given frequency range, where n = 0 or a whole number. The surface exposed by the conductor (13) to the earth plane (16) has a spacing to said plane such that a characteristic impedance (ZO) is given to the connection conductor (13), so that the impedance at the antenna feed point together with the connection through the window is transformed into an impedance, the size of which is equal to that of the antenna lead between the box and the radio or communication apparatus.
