    • A pressure flap for eliminating slack in a tape cassette. The pressure flap includes a body portion having a tape contact edge at a first end thereof, and a fold line at a second end thereof. The body portion is bowed along a line extending generally parallel to the fold line. The pressure flap also includes a folded portion extending contiguously from the fold line of the body portion at a predetermined angle. The body portion includes a pair of opposed lateral edges secured to a pair of opposed sides of the folded portion. In a preferred embodiment, the pressure flap is fabricated from carbon-filled, high-density polyethylene, and the opposed sides of the folded portion are fused to the lateral edges of the body portion during fabrication of the pressure flap.

A rigid magnetic disc with high track density is driven by a stepper motor in an open-loop fashion or without servomechanism control. The memory apparatus includes: band structure including a spring bias for coupling stepper motor drive to apparatus supporting magnetic heads above and/or below the spinning disc and for temperature compensating for disc/apparatus expansion and contraction; manually operable control for zeroing the magnetic heads, moving and locking them in the disc's landing zone as, for example, while in transit, and providing a travel limit to head movement when the memory apparatus is operating; keying apparatus for preventing erroneous insertion and mis-alignment of and damage to an optical transducer relative to an optical mask arranged to spin with the disc structure; shim apparatus for precisely positioning the magnetic heads in the spin axis direction; viscously-coupled inertia apparatus for damping the stepping motor's step-rotary motion; a device for employing spinning motion associated with the disc for cooling purposes; and other structure.

    • An arrangement for magnetic disk memories having a plurality of modular memory disk units in separate housings mounted in a single cabinet is described. Support yokes for each unit support a pair of hubs with the rotatable disk mounted between bearings in the two hubs. In addition, a closed, substantially circular, housing around the disk is mounted on the hubs to maintain dimensional stability relative to the disk in radial and circumferential directions. Magnetic recording heads are mounted on sides of the housing generally toward the periphery and are, therefore, maintained in precise position relative to the disk. Matched pairs of preloaded angular contact bearings are employed for mounting the disk on a shaft in the hub and both inner and outer races of the bearings are clamped in place. Undue loads on the bearings are prevented by making the housing with flexural rigidity in a direction along the axis of the bearings high enough to hold the recording heads in substantially fixed position and low enough to apply an insubstantial axial load on the bearings.

    • An air circulation control system for a magnetic recording disc drive employing a baffle pivotally mounted near the shroud which encircles the disc pack. A torsion spring holds the baffle in a retracted position against the shroud adjacent to the head access opening in the shroud for insertion and removal of disc packs. Rotation of the disc packs causes air flow across the baffle until the air flow pulls the baffle into the spaces between the discs of the disc pack. Thereafter the baffle causes an air pressure differential around the periphery of the disc pack which is used to pump cooling air through the disc drive.
