    • An apparatus and method are disclosed for transferring part data, such as sheet metal part data, between computer-based application or CAD environments and for editing such part data. The application environments may include a 2-D CAD program environment and an object oriented bend model program environment. An interface is provided through which a 2-D CAD system may access data from the object oriented bend model system and by which data may be transferred between the systems to permit editing and updating of the part model within and from both applications. The interface may be implemented through a library or set of application program interface (API) functions and a message-based protocol (such as dynamic data exchange (DDE)) to facilitate the exchange of sheet metal part data. Various editing capabilities or tools may also be provided to enable, for example, the attachment of faces of the part or the shifting of one face relative to another face of the part.

CONSTITUTION: The sheet metal bending machine with a bending unit driven by actuators(12,15) is characterized by comprising a data processing system including a technological bending database(26) which is programmed to represent the behavior of the machine-sheet assembly under the bending process, the database being provided with a predefined stored set of sheet metal angle and thickness data(23,24) and supplied with nominal angle and thickness data of the sheet metal to be bent; a material characteristics database(27) provided with a predefined set of sheet metal material data and supplied with material type data(25) of the sheet metal to be bent; a machine geometry database(28) provided with a predefined set of geometrical data of the bending machine; a mathematical model calculation algorithm(29) for calculating the movements of the bending unit actuators(12,15) according to processed data provided by the databases(26,27,28) and sheet metal length data of the sheet metal to be bent; thickness measuring means for measuring the thickness of the sheet metal to be bent; and a mathematical model recalculation algorithm(33) for recalculating the movements of the bending unit actuators(12,15) according to measured thickness data(32) provided by the thickness measuring means and calculated data from the calculation algorithm(29).
