Each alignment member/groove pair can be positioned and oriented to control positioning of the first and second connection assemblies relative to each other in a single direction but allow movement in other directions to prevent physical stressing of the connection assemblies. Each alignment member/groove pair forms a self-aligning mechanism that can be used to align a first and second array of fiber ends to provide effective light transfer between fiber optic cables.

    • A multi-fiber, fiber optic connector (10) is provided having a housing (14) having a first end for receiving a multi-fiber fiber optic cable (12) and a second end having openings for the fibers from the cable. First and second keys (18A,B) for setting the polarity of the fibers within the connector located on opposing sides of the connector. The connector has either one of guide pins or guide pin receiving holes (16) for guiding the connection with a second connector. The keys (18A,B) are movable between a first active position and a second retracted position, such that when one of the keys is in the first active position, the fibers are presented within the connector in a first polarity and when the second key is in the first active position, the fibers are presented within the connector in a second polarity reversed from the first polarity.

    • A connector (10) for joining a first fiber optic cable end (16) and a second fiber optic end (18) includes first (22) and second (52) connector ends adapted to receive the first and second fiber optic cable ends. Each connector end houses a plurality of termini (24, 58) for terminating the fiber optic cable ends. The connector also includes a first alignment feature (32, 62, 34, 64) and a second alignment feature (50, 67, 78). The second alignment includes a plurality of termini keys (78) with each termini key being disposed on each of the termini and fitting into a key termini slot (50, 67) formed in the first and second connector ends for receiving the termini. The first and second alignment features ensure that the first connector end is properly aligned with respect to the second connector end and that each termini disposed in the first connector end is properly aligned with each termini disposed in the second connector end.
