摘要： In one embodiment of an apparatus and process for packaging foodstuffs or other materials in a rigid container sealed by a flexible cover, a desired quantity of material to be packaged containing or together with some water or other liquid is placed in the container, the flexible cover is secured on the container so as to leave at least one unsealed opening, the container is heated and/or placed in a partial vacuum to bring the liquid above its boiling point to cause or permit vapor generated by the boiling liquid to expel other gases from the container through the unsealed opening, and the container is sealed while gas or vapor is still flowing out of the container through the unsealed opening.

Multiple conduits may be used to introduce the inert gas. In certain embodiments, the openings of the one or more inert gas conduits may be remote from spaces defined by projections of the container openings.

摘要： An apparatus for packaging an item in a controlled atmosphere enclosure is provided. The apparatus includes a conveyor for continuously conveying a series of containers along a defined path. The path has sequentially oriented first and second portions, and defines a first side border and an opposite second side border. The apparatus introduces a covering material over the path of containers such that a space is created between the containers and the moving covering material. A vacuum gallery is disposed substantially adjacent the first border for applying a vacuum to the space only in the first portion of the path. A gas gallery is disposed substantially adjacent the second border for continuously introducing a selected gas into the space in both the first portion and the second portion of the path. The apparatus also includes a sealing head for mating and sealing the containers with a corresponding section of the moving covering material in the second portion of the path to form a controlled atmosphere environment enclosure.

摘要： A method and apparatus for forming capsules having a fill material which might be adversely affected by the presence of air. A capsule forming material, which forms a portion of the casing of the capsules, is fed along a predetermined path of movement past a sealing station for sealing of the cavities. A fill material is deposited in the cavities of the capsule forming material prior to cavities being sealed at the sealing station. An evacuation member having an evacuation surface is disposed to face the cavities in the capsule forming material and seal against the capsule forming material as the capsule forming material is moved past the evacuation member to form a substantially airtight seal between the evacuation member and the capsule forming material. The evacuation member includes first and second flow communication conduits communicating with the evacuation surface, the first flow communication conduit communicating with a source of vacuum for withdrawing air from between the surface of the capsule forming material and the evacuation surface and the second flow communication conduit communicating with a source of inert gas for introducing inert gas between the surface of the capsule forming material and the evacuation surface. The first and second flow communication conduits communicate with the evacuation surface at spaced-apart locations so as to provide a continuous sweeping of air from the cavities and replacement thereof with an inert gas.
