    • A method of determining a direction of a power boost applied to a power cylinder of a variable effort power steering system includes measuring a pressure of a hydraulic fluid between a pump and a control valve. A first position of the hand wheel is detected and initialized when the pressure is within a pre-defined equilibrium pressure range. A second position of the hand wheel is detected in response to rotational movement of the hand wheel. The first position and the second position of the hand wheel are measured in cumulative degrees rotated left or right of a on-center orientation of the hand wheel. The second position is subtracted from the first position to obtain a differential value representing the direction of the power boost. A negative differential value represents a first direction and a positive differential value represents a second direction of the power boost.

The restricting device restricting the relative rotation between the input and output shafts in accordance with a driving condition of the vehicle adjusts the hydraulic pressure for pressing one of the input and output shaft via the plunger inserted into the guide bore formed in the other of the input and output shaft, in accordance with the driving condition of the vehicle by means of the hydraulic pressure adjustment mechanism. The plunger is guided by the inner circumference of the guide bore to the direction in which the plunger approaches to and goes away from the other of the input and output shaft when the input and output shafts relatively rotate. The friction reducing element is interposed between the inner circumference of the guide bore and the outer circumference of the plunger.

    • A motor vehicle power steering gear has a proportional control valve with first and second valve members connected by a torsion spring and defining a center position with zero torque in the torsion spring. Electromagnetic apparatus for varying the magnitude of the effective restoring torque of the torsion spring comprises a stationary exciting coil, a circular permanent magnet member connected to one of the first and second valve members for rotation therewith and comprising a plurality (n) of permanent magnets of alternating radial polarity, and a pole piece connected to the other of the first and second valve members for rotation therewith, magnetically coupled to the exciting coil, and having a pair of magnetic flux conducting rings each defining a plurality (n/2) of pole teeth facing the permanent magnet member and opposing the pole teeth of the other to define pole tooth pairs each having a region of circumferential overlap. The permanent magnet member is rotationally oriented, with the first and second valve members in the center position, in a position of zero electromagnetic torque with no current in the exciting coil and with alternate ones of the boundaries separating the permanent magnets aligned substantially at the centers of the regions of circumferential overlap of successive pole tooth pairs, whereby electric current through the exciting coil provides substantial torque between the first and second valve members at and around the center position. Valve angle sensing apparatus provides a signal for controlling current through the exciting coil to provide a steering preload.

A power steering resistance control system resists relative rotation between the inner and outer valve members with a force which varies as a function of variations in vehicle speed and steering demand. Fluid pressure is applied against the force transmitting member to urge it in the first direction. In a first embodiment, a speed responsive valve is operable to vary the fluid pressure applied against the force transmitting member as a function of variations in vehicle speed. A hydraulic pressure responsive valve is operable to vary the fluid pressure applied against the force transmitting member as a function of steering demand. In a second embodiment, only a hydraulic pressure responsive valve controls the pressure applied against the force transmitting member.
