    • A single-carriage reversing train positioning system which includes an extending spike-type car engaging member for engaging and moving one or more railcars. An extending chuck assembly may be provided with the ability to operate gates in bottom-discharging railcars. The system uses a single self-propelled carriage with an on-board carriage drive system that includes a drive motor which operates the car along a fixed chain situated along a guideway. A generally horizontally disposed, laterally extendable pin car-engaging assembly is mounted on the car-moving carriage for aligning with and engaging a hook loop on a railcar for moving the car. A gate-operating assembly which includes a laterally extendable chuck system which aligns with, engages and rotates gate-operating capstans on bottom discharging railcars may also be provided.

    • An accumulating conveyor system for shuttling conveyor trucks along a conveyor track from a drop off point at the end of a first conveyor drive to a point at the beginning of a second conveyor drive. The accumulating conveyor system includes a drive track which extends parallel along the conveyor track. A plurality of tractors ride along the drive track and selectively couple with a truck at the drop-off point, then tow the truck along the conveyor track to the pick-up point of the second conveyor drive where the tractor uncouples from the truck. A return track extends parallel along the drive track for enabling return of the tractors from the pick-up point to the drop-off point. A switch mechanism transfers the trucks from the drive track to the return track and then back to the drive track.

    • A coupling mechanism for use on a railcar moving vehicle designed to couple with European-type railway cars having an end sill at each end of the car which supports a centrally disposed draft hook and a pair of buffers mounted one at each end of the end sill, the coupling mechanism including a casting which moves laterally on a plurality of rollers, a crossbar or lifting beam carried on the end of the casting and pivotal relative thereto about a vertical axis, a pair of lifting forks carried on the respective ends of the crossbar, and a pair of buffer plates carried at opposite ends of the crossbar and positioned to push against corresponding buffers on a railway car. The coupling mechanism also includes a sensing device which controls lateral movement of the casting during a pushing or pulling operation in accordance with relative lateral movement of the railcar end sill and buffers.

    • An improved railcar moving vehicle is capable of travel in a first rail travel mode on a railway track on rail wheels and in a second ground travel mode on ground wheels. When the rail wheels are driving the vehicle on the rails in the rail travel mode, further traction assist is achieved by lowering powered ones of the ground wheels so as to frictionally engage either the surface of the rail bed or the rails themselves with sufficient force to drivingly increase the traction of the vehicle in the rail travel mode. The powered ground wheels are preferably driven independently of each other and of the rail wheel sets in two of the preferred embodiments by independent hydrostatic motors. In the other preferred embodiment, the ground wheels are powered from the rail wheels.

A pair of rubber wheels, which may take the form of rubber-tired wheels is associated with the front end of the tractor. At least one pair of flanged wheels which can be raised and lowered is associated with the front end of said tractor. One further pair of flanged wheels is associated with the rear end of the tractor. One pair of upwardly and downwardly moveable rubber wheels, which may be rubber-tired wheels, is associated with the rear. During operation on rails, the front end of the tractor is raised and the rear end is lowered, while in the terrain driving mode the front end is lowered and the rear end is raised.
