    • An apparatus for deforming a pipe includes a boxed structure having an entry and exit for the pipe. The boxed structure acts as a constraint on a peripheral of the pipe along a path of movement thereof. An elongate wedge member depends inwardly from the boxed structure and is arranged in use to lie alongside the path of movement of the pipe and to project increasingly into the pipe as the pipe moves past the wedge member in a forward direction in the path of movement. The pipe to be deformed in the path of movement is engaged progressively increasingly by the wedge member whereby to indent progressively a part of the peripheral wall of the pipe such to deform the pipe longitudinally in the path of movement with the pipe through the boxed structure.

    • A liner (30) of polyethylene housing an SDR of (33) or less is pulled through a die (36) and through the pipe (10) and allowed to revert to the internal diameter of the pipe (10). The force of pulling is half the yield strength of the liner (30) or less. The die (36) has an entry (54); a throat (58) and an exit (59), the entry (54) decreasing in diameter towards the throat (58) and the exit (59) increasing in diameter away from the throat (58). The liner (30) has a maximum diameter before the die (36), a minimum diameter in the die (36) and intermediate diameter after the die (36). The liner (30) bending inwards before first contacting the die (36) at the entry (54), then continuously bending through its minimum diameter as it passes the throat (58) and then undergoing die (36) swell resulting in said intermediate diameter. The throat (58) is defined by the merger in a continuous curve of a radius joining the entry (54) and a radius joining the exit (59).

    • A thermoplastic pipe liner (L) is initially formed in a cylindrical shape with a diameter slightly larger than the internal diameter of the pipe (80). The liner (L) is temporarily deformed at an elevated temperature to a different, U-shaped cross-section, to reduce its overall cross-sectional dimension to facili­tate insertion into the pipe (80) to be lined. Once inserted, the pipe liner (L) is reheated to the crystallization temperature of the thermoplastic material to cause the liner (L) to return to its original cylin­drical shape. Pressure within the liner (L) is also increased in two stages to cause the liner (L) to conform to the interior surface of the pipe (80). After expansion, ends of the liner (L) which extend beyond the pipe (80) are flared into engagement with the pipe flanges (82). For lining pipe normally containing in service fluid under pressure, the liner (L), after insertion into the pipe (80), can be mechanically reformed to engage the interior wall of the pipe (80). The normal service pressure is then used to maintain the liner (L) in its generally cylindrical shape over the time necessary to completely relieve the stresses in the liner (L) tending to cause the liner (L) to return to its deformed shape.
