A preferably externally accessible pocket is formed coextensively with the rear protective face, adapted to allow insertion and removal of cards or paper currency into and out of the pocket in the manner of a wallet. The window may be an absence of housing material, allowing direct user contact with the front of the device, or it may thin and transparent, allowing functional contact therethrough. The pocket may be formed between the housing and the device or between the housing and an additional layer.

The purse insert may be transferred into an alternate insert, placed in a purse shell or carried independently. The insert is transferrable between the outer shell and an alternate outer shell. Moreover, the purse insert fits within the purse shell and is transferrable from the insert to the purse shell.

A method of separably attaching a functional device such as a wallet to a handbag is also disclosed.
