    • Phonebook systems and associated methods are disclosed that provide a mechanism for protecting private information of a contact from being published in a network-based phonebook. A typical network-based phonebook service allows subscribers to set up network-based phonebooks, where each phonebook includes one or more contacts and associated contact information. Before contact information for a contact is included in a network-based phonebook for a subscriber, a phonebook system identifies privacy criteria for the contact. The privacy criteria may be predefined by the contact, predefined by the service provider, or predefined by another entity. The phonebook system then processes the privacy criteria to identify the contact information for the contact that is authorized to be included in the network-based phonebook. The processing system may then include the authorized contact information in the network-based phonebook, and block the unauthorized contact information from being included in the network-based phonebook.

    • Communication networks and associated methods are disclosed that provide a voicemail blocking service. A communication network of the invention comprises a network node and a voicemail system. The network node receives a call from a calling party to a subscriber of the voicemail blocking service, and attempts to connect the call to a communication device of the subscriber. If the subscriber does not answer the call, then the network node processes voicemail blocking information for the subscriber to determine whether the call is allowed to be routed to the voicemail system. If a determination is made that the call is not allowed to be routed to the voicemail system, then the network node blocks the call from being routed to the voicemail system. If a determination is made that the call is allowed to be routed to the voicemail system, then the network node routes the call to the voicemail system.

ITU-T Q.1600 and ETSI 300 374-1 defines the network configuration of SCP, SSP and stand-alone IP units using SS7 ISUP connection, but ITU-T Q.1600 and ETSI 300 374-1 does not specify in detail the SS7 ISUP messages for bi-directional communication between a SSP and an IP unit. This invention details the message flow between a SCP, a SSP and an ISUP IP unit, especially in the messages between the SSP and IP unit using SS7 ISUP protocol. With the signaling method of the present invention, SCP can send INAP operations, such as PA, PCUI to instruct an external IP unit to play an announcement or collect user information, then an IP unit can send back the related operations back to SCP. In this case, the resource of the IP unit can be shared by other switches and SSPs in the network.

    • An intelligent-networked telecommunications system allows a customer to make a free telephone call after listening to a product or service advertisement. The customer reaches a product/service menu after dialing a telephone number with a special prefix reserved for Advertisement With Bonus Call (AWBC) service. The customer then chooses the advertisement of interest. After listening to the advertisement, the system allows the customer to enter a destination number for a free bonus telephone call. In the preferred embodiment, the bonus call is limited to a predefined duration monitored by a timer reset at the beginning of the bonus call. When the time limit is near, the system broadcasts this fact to both the calling party and the called party. At the expiration of the time limit, the call is automatically disconnected, and the customer can be returned to the AWBC product/service main menu. Charging the bonus call to the sponsor of the product/service advertisement to which the customer has listened completes the transaction.

    • An intelligent-networked telecommunication system avoids redundant billing for telephone transactions in which there is a billing conflict between the Intelligent Network (IN) and another component of the system by its Service Control Point (SCP) creating a service-dependent pseudo Calling Line Identifier (CLI). When a Pseudo CLI look-up table stored in the SCP database indicates that a pseudo CLI is to be created (based upon the Destination Number, DN, or the Service Key, SK), the SCP combines a prefix listed in the table with the Calling Party Number (CgPN) to form a pseudo CLI or create a totally new CLI number string. When the call is connected to the DN, the created pseudo CLI, rather than the original CLI, is transferred to the DN. A pseudo CLI is indicated where the IN is programmed to handle the billing of a particular transaction, and where the instrumentality of the DN (e.g., toll switch or special service platform) is also set up to handle billing. When the toll switch, special service platform, etc., attempts to bill for the transaction (already being billed by the IN) the pseudo CLI prevents it from billing an actual customer since no actual customer will have any of the pseudo CLIs. The service-dependent CLI also indicates to the toll switch, or special service platform, etc., that the current IN service call has already been billed through the IN.

    • Centralized charging systems and methods are disclosed for providing offline charging and online charging for a plurality of network elements. The centralized charging system is implemented in a communication network between the network elements and offline/online charging systems. A network element interface of the centralized charging system receives charging request messages from CTFs in the network elements. An accounting data forwarding function processes charging data in the charging request messages to determine if offline or online charging is invoked for the services. For offline charging, the accounting data forwarding function generates offline accounting request messages that include the charging data. For online charging, the accounting data forwarding function generates online accounting request messages that include the charging data. The charging system interface then transmits the offline accounting request messages to the offline charging system, and transmits the online accounting request messages to the online charging system.
