摘要： A jaw assembly is provided with a pair of jaws which are closed with a flexible, tension member that is pulled by the operator of the instrument. In a preferred embodiment, one of the jaws is pivotally mounted in a slot to the other jaw. A cord, having a loop configuration, is attached to the pivoting jaw and can be pulled to pivot the jaw closed. A second cord can be provided to initially hold the proximal end of the pivoting jaw away from the other jaw until the distal ends of the jaws are closer together. In another embodiment, jaws can be closed in a parallel orientation by rotating two pulleys with threaded shafts engaged with the jaws.

摘要： Surgical clips and devices for ligating tissue, as well as methods related to the same, are generally provided. In one exemplary embodiment a surgical clip includes a pair of opposed first and second leg members and a knee portion formed between the leg members' proximal and distal ends. The leg members can include at least one tissue-grasping element formed on respective inner surfaces, and at least one raised area located on a portion of respective generally planer outer surfaces. The clip can also include an apex having opposed ends that join the proximal ends of the first and second leg members and at least one notch formed on an inner surface of the apex. The raised area of the leg members can be disposed distal to the apex and proximal to the knee portion. Other embodiments of clips and methods for ligating tissue are also provided.

In various embodiments, the surgical staple can include at least one deformable member which can puncture a hole in soft tissue as it is inserted therethrough. The deformable member can include a material thereon, or can be comprised of a material, which can expand and substantially fill the puncture hole in the soft tissue. In various embodiments, at least a portion of the deformable member can be coated with a hydrophilic material which can expand when exposed to water, or other bodily fluids, and apply a compression force to the perimeter of the puncture hole. Such a compression force can reduce bleeding from the puncture hole and thereby reduce any potential complications resulting therefrom.

摘要： The present invention provides a surgical implant which can be made of a metal that corrodes while implanted in tissue of a patient. The surgical implant has a preferential corrosion zone adapted to corrode at a different rate than the rest of the surgical implant. In one embodiment, the surgical implant is surgical staple that may be formed into a “B-shape” when deployed into tissue, although the invention also is applicable to many other kinds of staples, clips, and other metallic surgical implants. In one embodiment, the preferential corrosion zone comprises an indentation that provides a site for crevice corrosion.
