    • A catheter with a small optical fiber or bundle of fibers includes a scanning mechanism constructed with the use of any vibration capable component. Magnetic, piezoelectric or other mechanisms are used to vibrate the end of the fiber and thus create a scanning effect which extends the field of view. One or more lenses may be utilized, including a lens attached to the distal tip of the image fiber, or a lens attached to the distal tip of the catheter for creating an image plane which can be scanned by the fiber. In one embodiment, multiple light sources may be connected to the fiber for enabling the use of field sequential color techniques for real-time imaging, as well as real-time fluorescent imaging for disease detection. A photodetector assembly connected to the proximal end may contain both filtered and unfiltered detectors for use with both standard imaging and fluorescent imaging. The resulting vision catheter is relatively inexpensive and disposable.

    • A step up transformer has an inert core, primary windings concentrically surrounding the inert core, and secondary windings concentrically surrounding the primary windings, the ratio of secondary windings to primary windings of up to 1,000,000:1. The step-up transformer is particularly useful in an x-ray catheter having an x-ray source in a vacuum tube and a power source. The power source can deliver a lower voltage which is stepped up at by the transformer to produce a voltage sufficient to stimulate production of x-rays by the x-ray emitter source. Methods for preparing the step-up transformer and x-ray catheter and methods of administering x-rays to subjects with the x-ray catheter of the invention are also disclosed.

    • A biopsy needle instrument for capturing a plurality of sequentially biopsied, discrete specimens. The instrument includes a housing, an axially elongated stylet and a cannula coaxially disposed about the stylet. The stylet and cannula have distal and proximal ends and extend from the housing. The stylet and cannula can move relative to each other and to the housing between retracted and extended positions. The stylet includes a side-facing notch adjacent the distal end of the stylet having an axial length that is greater than a predetermined specimen length. Portions of the cannula adjacent the distal end overlie the side-facing notch when the cannula and stylet are both retracted. When the stylet is extended and the cannula is retracted, a distal portion of the notch having length corresponding to the predetermined specimen length is disposed for facilitating the prolapse of tissue into the notch.
