    • A horizontal deflection circuit for a multiple scan display, capable of controlling the horizontal deflection voltage for a plurality of horizontal scanning frequencies. The output power of the amplifier is controlled on the basis of the result of detection of the data of horizontal size of the image plane so that the horizontal size of the image plane is adjusted to a predetermined size. The data of horizontal size of the image plane is obtained through the detection of the amplitude of a flyback pulse signal. The amplitude of a sawtooth signal for horizontal scanning is controlled according to the deviation of the detected amplitude of the flyback pulse signal from a predetermined value. The horizontal deflection circuit is very simple in construction and is capable of carrying out continuous horizontal deflection according to the horizontal scanning frequency varying in a plurality of levels.

    • There is disclosed a molten metal level monitoring and controlling apparatus for continuous casting machines which employs an eddy-current type distance measuring device for measuring the level of the molten metal in the mold of a continuous casting machine. The eddy-current type distance measuring device generates a molten metal level signal by detecting in a noncontact manner the distance between its detecting mechanism fixedly mounted in place just above the surface of the molten metal and the molten metal level. According to another embodiment of the invention, the detecting mechanism of the eddy-current type distance measuring device is arranged so as to be vertically movable just above the surface of the molten metal, whereby the detecting mechanism is moved in response to variations in the level of the molten metal to always maintain constant the distance of the detecting mechanism from the molten metal level, and the potentiometer attached to the detecting mechanism generates a molten metal level signal indicative of the distance travelled by the detecting mechanism. The thusly generated molten metal level signal is displayed on a recorder and it is also used for adjusting the pouring rate and the casting withdrawing rate through a monitoring and controlling mechanism so as to maintain the level of the molten metal in the mold within a predetermined range.

    • There are provided a method and apparatus for noncontact measurement of a gauge of a high temperature material such as a red-hot steel slab, wherein the entire optical system including a light source, a filter and a detector is employed at wavelengths in the near-ultraviolet zone, preferably in the range 4,300 - 4,400 A, and a sampling mark corresponding to a reference projection point for an optical mark of wavelengths in the near-ultraviolet zone is established on the screen of a television receiver on which the optical mark is displayed in accordance with the output of a camera tube which receives the optical mark through a band-pass filter which transmits the wavelengths in the near-ultraviolet zone, whereby the light source and the camera tube are translated from the reference positions until the optical mark formed on a high temperature material to be measured coincides with the sampling mark so that the gauge of the high temperature material is measured in accordance with the distance covered by the parallel motion of the light source and the camera tube.
