摘要： Method and system are disclosed for improving the channel quality in a packet data radio network. In each cell of the radio network the packet data is measured based on channel utilization and/or packet queue measurements. A power control algorithm uses the packet data load to determine a common or equal broadcast or transmitted power level for the channels in the cell. The common broadcast or transmitted power may subsequently be adjusted on an individual channel basis for channels that fall outside a predefined quality window.

The present invention addresses mainly the problem of improving reliability and communication quality in a cellular radio communication system (1). According to the invention, it is determined whether one of an uplink (25) or a downlink (25) of a radio channel (23) is subject to a Rayleigh fading dip. If it is determined that one of the uplink (25) or the downlink (27) is subject to a Rayleigh fading dip, it is then determined whether it is necessary to execute a countermeasure in order to avoid the negative influences of Rayleigh fading on the channel (23). The invention is not limited to improving conditions on one channel but may be employed to any number of channels used for communications in the cellular radio communication system (1).

摘要： A method of assigning initial uplink and downlink power levels for a transaction of a data package between a mobile station (12) and a base station (11) in a radio telecommunications network. A historical database (13) of signal strength measurements, interference measurements, and uplink and downlink power level settings in the network is maintained. To set downlink power, an uplink signal strength (16) of an initial access signal (15) sent from the mobile station to the base station is measured at the base station. The measured uplink signal strength (16) is sent to the historical database where it is correlated with an associated downlink power level setting. The correlated downlink power level setting (17) is sent to the base station where it is utilized as the initial downlink power level setting for a first transmission (19) from the base station to the mobile station. To set uplink power, the signal strength (42) of an initial packet channel request (41) on the control channel is sent to the historical database along with an interference measurement (43) on the packet date channel. An associated mobile station uplink power level setting (44) is retrieved from the database and sent to the mobile station where it is utilized for the first data transmission (46). A closed loop power control method may be utilized to adjust either the uplink or the downlink power level to an optimum level.

摘要： According to embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a radio base station (20) and a corresponding method for estimating the quality of the uplink control channel. The method comprises measuring (32, 42) a quality parameter of the uplink data channel, and using (38, 50) this to estimate the quality of the uplink control channel. In one embodiment, measurements of the uplink control channel are taken and their reliability determined. If the reliability is low (i.e. below a threshold, or below the respective measurements taken on the uplink data channel), then measurements on the data channel are used instead of those made on the control channel to estimate the control channel quality.
