    • The automatic vehicle braking device is equipped with a braking force control processing portion which, based on the judgment result of a collision judgment processing portion and the judgment result of a steering avoidance judgment processing portion, imparts a turning property in a direction of head-on collision to the vehicle when the lateral position of the obstacle with respect to a travel route curve is large in a condition in which the driver is unconscious of a high possibility of collision between the vehicle and the obstacle and has taken no steering avoidance action yet. As a result, it is possible to reduce the speed of the vehicle and, at the same time, mitigate the damage suffered by the vehicle occupants at the time of collision.

    • A wavelength selector switch includes first and second refracting plates, an optical splitter, first and second optical systems, an optical coupler polarization controller, and second refracting plate. The first refracting plate refracts the second wavelength-multiplexed light beam. The optical splitter spatially splits into a plurality of wavelength components light beams. The first optical system changes the wavelength components into parallel light beams. The polarization controller selectively changes a polarization angle of each of the parallel light beams. The second optical system condenses the parallel light beams. The optical coupler multiplexes into a third wavelength-multiplexed light beam the parallel light beams condensed. The second refracting plate directs wavelength components of the third wavelength-multiplexed light beam to the first and second optical output ports depending on their polarization angles.

    • In a variable optical delay circuit to be used for compensation for polarization mode dispersion of an optical signal and for other purposes, there are provided a first birefringent member, a second birefringent member and a variable optical rotator interposed between the first birefringent member and the second birefringent member for varying a polarization state of light outputted from the first birefringent member. The birefringent members and the variable optical rotator are disposed on the same optical axis, and the optical axis of each of the birefringent members is set to perpendicularly intersect a traveling direction of inputted light. Therefore, by varying the optical rotation angle of the variable optical rotator, an arbitrary delay quantity corresponding thereto is obtainable in a continuous (analog-like) fashion without undergoing spatial separation between polarization components of the inputted light and varying the intensity (loss) of each of the polarization components.

    • An optical device and manufacturing method therefor relate to a slab optical waveguide, a first optical waveguide, a plurality of second optical waveguides and a reflector. The slab optical waveguide has first and second ends. The first optical waveguide is optically connected to the first end of the slab optical waveguide. The plurality of second optical waveguides each have first and second guide bars with the first guide bars being optically connected to the second end of the slab optical waveguide and the second guide bars being optically connected to the first guide bars. The second guide bars may have a width greater than that of the first guide bars. The reflector is optically connected to each of the second guide bars of the second optical waveguides. The reflector may be formed on an end face on each of the second guide bars substantially perpendicular to an optical axis of the respective first guide bars.
