    • A method of preparing fertile, diploid eggplants including a trait found naturally in species of the family Solanaceae, such as reduced susceptibility to the fungal disease caused by Verticillium and/or Fusarium, said trait(s) not being found naturally in eggplants which comprises: i) irradiating a Solanaceae protoplast donor having a desired trait with an irradiating dose sufficient to cause fragmentation of the chromosomes of the donor protoplast, ii) fusing said irradiated donor protoplast with an eggplant protoplast serving as an acceptor wherein the donor protoplast and the acceptor protoplast are derived from different explant types and, iii) regenerating the fused protoplasts obtained to mature plants. Also fertile, diploid eggplants comprising desirable traits found naturally in species of the family Solanaceae other than egg plants.
