    • A method of treating a region of diseased tissue using a probe is disclosed. A probe cannula is introduced into the tissue of the patient until a distal end of the cannula is located at or proximate to the treatment region. A plurality of electrodes are then deployed from the distal end of the cannula into the treatment region. Energy (e.g., radiofrequency energy) is then delivered through the plurality of electrodes to the tissue. The cannula is then secured to an immobile object external to the patient. The treatment region is irradiated with a therapeutically effective dose of an ionizing radiation while the plurality of electrodes remain at least partially advanced within the treatment region and while the cannula remains secured to the immobile object.

    • A tissue ablation probe comprises an electrically conductive probe shaft, at least one electrode, and an electrically insulative sheath disposed on the probe shaft. The insulative sheath has thickened regions forming alternating ribs and depressions that longitudinally extend along the probe shaft. The ribs allow the ablation probe to be delivered through a tightly toleranced delivery device. While the ribs may shear off during the delivery process, the underlying probe shaft will remain covered by the remaining portion of the insulative sheath. The tissue ablation probe may be used in a tissue ablation assembly that additionally comprises a delivery cannula having a lumen in which the tissue ablation probe may be removably disposed. In this case, the sheath has an outer periphery having a size substantially the same as the diameter of the lumen, so that the inner surface of the delivery cannula cooperates with the depressions to create lumens that longitudinally extend within the cannula.

    • A medical probe assembly and method for ablating tissue using radio frequency energy. The medical probe assembly includes an elongated shaft, a needle electrode array, and a hinged handle. The handle has a collar, which when in the up position covers the hinge so that the device can be used as a conventional medical probe. When the collar is in the down position the hinge is exposed, and the handle can be bent to reduce its overall height. With this reduced height the probe can be used while a patient is lying in a CT scanner or an MRI chamber. Therefore, the surgeon can monitor the ablation during the procedure, and thus avoid unnecessary damage to the surrounding healthy tissue on the one hand, and insufficient ablation of the diseased tissue on the other hand. An alternate embodiment uses a flexible handle instead of a hinged one.

    • A system for treating tissue includes a source of conductive and/or magnetic beads, a first member, e.g., a catheter or cannula, coupled to the source of magnetic beads, and a second member, e.g., a catheter or cannula, carrying a magnet on its distal end. The system is used for ablating or otherwise treating tissue within a target tissue region including a blood vessel contacting or passing therethrough. Magnetic beads are introduced into the target tissue region, e.g., using the first member, and a magnetic field is generated within the target tissue region, e.g., using the second member, to cause the magnetic beads to migrate towards a wall of the vessel.
