    • PURPOSE:To reduce installation cost and also to raise productivity by making proper stress alleviation in a short time by controlling temperature and time patterns in the tempering of large diameter steel tube. CONSTITUTION:In the tempering of a large diameter steel tube, e.g., UO steel pipe, a cooling time from the tempering temperature to 300 deg.C is set to more than 60 sec, and then the cooling time from 300 deg.C to water temperature is made faster by water cooling. If the cooling time down to 300 deg.C is set to more than 60 sec, as shown in the Fig. [where (1), Code (2) Tempering temperature, (3) Measuring position, (4) Inside surface, (5) Outside surface, (6) Water hardening is made from 930 deg.C before tempering, (7) Cooling time(sec), (8) Tensile, (9) Residual stress, (10) Compressive], the residual stress can be practically suppressed to allowable 10 kg/mm or leee. In short, treatment can be performed withing less than 1/3 of the time required for the conventional air cooling method by the procedure in which air cooling is made down to 300 deg.C and then below the temperature, water cooling is made. Thus, productivity can be greatly raised as compared with the conventional method requiring wider space and larger facilities.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain high srength and high toughness as well as reduce difference in hardness between inner face and outer face by selcting a higher quenchability (D1 value) of welding metal for inner side than the welding metal for outer side. CONSTITUTION:For large diameter steel of a round section, the value of quenchability (D1 value) for the welding metal of the inner side which is higher than that of the welding metal of the outer side varies with the thickness, etc. of base metal used to a great extent, and therefore is not limiting. And, where the thickness of plate is greater, it is more effective to make D1 value difference between the outer and inner faces greater, whereas where it is thinner, it is better to make it samller. Although quenching from the outer side is described in this invention, the same is true of the case of cooling the inner and outer faces. In short, since the inner face cooling is to cool the inner side of closed structures as compared with the case of the outer face cooling, cooling ability tends to lower in general due to the waste water, etc. of quenching water, and thus the lowering of cooling ability can be compensated by increasing the quenchability.

    • PURPOSE:To secure uniform cooling and to produce heat-treated pipe of excellent quality, by detecting the position of four or more points on the circle at which the cooling of steel pipe starts by means of industrial televisions, and by controlling the position of cooling nozzles in order to make the circle cross the pass line at right angles. CONSTITUTION:At four points on a circle where the cooling of steel pipe 22 starts are arranged industrial televisions (ITV) 23 at an interval of 90 deg.. When hardening is normal, i.e., cooling-start line 3 crosses the pass line at right angles, the cooling- start line is regulated so as to be located at the center of each ITV 23. In such situation, the hardening of the steel pipe 22 is monitored. When cooling becomes abnormal, i.e., cooling-start line 3 inclines to the pass line, red-hot part decreases at the upper ITV 23 position and increases at the lower ITV 23 position. The nonconcentric state in arrangement of the steel pipe 22 and cooling nozzles 1--- is indicated as a relative slippage of cooling-start line and is distinguished easily.
