In at least one embodiment, the backlight turning-ON drive circuit includes a controller for controlling the direct-type backlights to turn ON in order in sync with the scanning signal in such a manner that the direct-type backlights are turned ON discretely over frames being continuous based on a vertical sync signal. In at least one embodiment, this provides a liquid crystal display device, which adopts scanning-type backlights and in which the pseudo contour and the flickering can be prevented with a driving clock of 60 Hz, which is generally adopted in liquid crystal display devices.

    • A control section is disclosed which divides a display screen into small regions, evaluates the relative brightness of each of the small regions in accordance with color data to be inputted as color data by which each pixel is displayed, and determines whether or not the display screen has a first small region that is brighter than the other small regions by a predetermined degree. Furthermore, the control section causes a first generating device to generate gradation data for use in the first small region, and causes a second generating device to generate gradation data for use in the other small regions. Even if the second generating section receives the same color data as the first generating section does, the second generating section limits the luminance of a W sub-pixel as compared to the first generating section. With this, the first small region can be displayed more strikingly brightly, so that a clearer, more realistic, and more appealing image can be displayed. This makes it possible to realize a display apparatus capable of displaying a clearer, more realistic, and more appealing image.

    • In one embodiment of the present invention, a large-screen or high-definition LCD is provided with its display quality improved significantly by reducing the viewing angle dependence of γ characteristic. Each pixel includes first and second subpixels, to which different voltages are applicable. The device further includes electrically independent storage capacitor trunks, each being electrically connected to the respective storage capacitor counter electrodes of either the first or second subpixels through storage capacitor lines. One vertical scanning period (V-Total) of an input video signal is divided into at least two subframes, in each of which a display signal voltage is written on each pixel. Two consecutive vertical scanning periods of the input video signal include a sequence in which the display signal voltage is written at the same polarity in two consecutive subframes and then has its polarity inverted in the next subframe. A storage capacitor counter voltage has, in each subframe, a first waveform, oscillating in a first cycle time PA, which is an integral number of times (and at least twice) as long as one horizontal scanning period (H), and a second waveform, defined such that the effective value of the CS voltage storage capacitor counter voltage has a predetermined constant value every predetermined number of consecutive vertical scanning periods of the input video signal. Between two subframes in which the polarity of the CS voltage is inverted, the first waveforms of the CS voltage storage capacitor counter voltages have a phase difference of 180 degrees.

    • The present invention relates to a vibration wave motor which is configured to prevent abnormal noise from being produced at a start time or a stop time and, more particularly, to a control device for a vibration wave motor which obtains a driving force by applying a periodic voltage to an electro-mechanical energy conversion element so as to generate in a vibration member thereof a plurality of standing waves having a phase difference therebetween, the plurality of standing waves being synthesized to generate a driving vibration in the vibration member. The control device comprises a frequency control circuit which varies a frequency of the periodic voltage and, when a driving force of the vibration wave motor is to be stopped, varies the periodic voltage so as to achieve a predetermined frequency at which a rotational speed of the vibration wave motor becomes zero, and a voltage control circuit which gradually lowers a voltage level of the periodic voltage to a predetermined voltage and then, after the frequency control circuit varies the frequency so as to achieve the predetermined frequency, stops energization of the vibration wave motor.
