摘要： An active matrix type liquid crystal display device in which the image display is controlled by an electric field parallel to the substrate surface, and which is capable of realizing a wide viewing angle comparable to that of a CRT and a response speed fast enough to display a dynamic image. For this purpose, the liquid crystal display device includes a pair of insulating substrates so disposed as to face each other; a pair of orientation films formed over the insulating substrates; a liquid crystal composition held between the pair of orientation films; and pixel electrodes and counter electrodes to apply a lateral electric field almost parallel to surfaces of the substrates. The initial orientation direction on one orientation film side and the initial orientation direction on the other orientation film side are line symmetric with respect to the direction of the lateral electric field.

摘要： A liquid crystal display device has a plurality of pixel elements, the optical transmissivity of which is varied by suitable electrical signals. The liquid crystal display device has electrodes which apply electric fields to a liquid crystal layer, the electric fields having components in a direction generally parallel to the liquid crystal layer. Each pixel element has at least one pixel electrode which extends in a common direction as a signal electrode and common electrodes which extend over several pixel elements. The common electrodes may be on the same side of the liquid crystal layer as the pixel and signal electrodes, or they may be on opposite sides. Each pixel may have two pixel electrodes with the signal electrode disposed therebetween, and there are then a pair of common electrodes with the pixel electrodes therebetween. The common electrodes may be common to adjacent pixel elements. The pixel electrodes and the common electrodes may be separated by an insulating film.

摘要： A liquid crystal display device can suppress the local temperature elevation of a liquid crystal in the vicinity of drivers. On a liquid-crystal-side surface of one substrate out of substrates which are arranged to face each other in an opposed manner while sandwiching a liquid crystal therebetween, a switching element which is operated in response to scanning signals from a gate signal line, a pixel electrode to which video signals from a drain signal line are supplied via the switching element, and a reference electrode which generates an electric field between the reference electrode and the pixel electrode are mounted on each pixel region of the liquid-crystal-side surface. The video signals from the drain signal line are generated by a driver chip mounted on one substrate. A light transmittivity of the liquid crystal layer is set to take a minimum value when a voltage is not applied between the pixel electrode and the reference electrode. A maximum amplitude of voltage of the video signals is set to a value not more than a voltage necessary for setting a relative transmittivity of the liquid crystal layer to 90%.
