    • This invention relates to a 4-quinolinone derivative represented by the following general formula (1): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 mean individually H, halogen, cyano, or lower alkyl, lower alkylsulfonyl, lower alkylsulfinyl, lower alkylthio or lower alkoxy which may be substituted by halogen, or phenylsulfonyl, phenylsulfinyl or phenylthio which may have a substituent; and R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 denote individually H, lower alkyl or cycloalkyl which may be substituted by halogen, or pyridyl, furanyl or phenyl which may have a substituent, or R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 may form a 4-, 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring, or a salt thereof, and an intermediate useful for the preparation thereof, and besides a medicinal composition comprising this compound as an active ingredient. The compound (1) or the salt thereof has an excellent potassium channel-activating effect and is useful as, for example, a prophylactic and therapeutic agent for diseases of circulatory and bronchial systems.

    • A partially saponified polyvinyl acetate having at least one stilbazolium group-containing photosensitive unit represented by the following general formula: ##STR1## (wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen atom, an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl group, an alkenyl group or an aralkyl group, R.sub.2 is hydrogen atom or an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl group, Y is a conjugated base of an inorganic or organic acid, m is an integer of 1 to 6, and n is 0 or 1) and an acetal unit represented by the following general formula: ##STR2## (wherein R.sub.3 is hydrogen atom or an alkyl group); the acetal units being contained therein in an amount of approximately 0.5 to 10.0 mol % with respect to mole of the polyvinylalcohol units thereof; the stilbazolium group-containing units being contained therein in an amount of approximately 0.5 to 5.0 mol % with respect to mole of the polyvinylalcohol units thereof; and having a degree of polymerization of approximately 500 to 3,000 and a degree of saponification of approximately 60% or higher. This polyvinyl acetate can be used as photosensitive resinous materials or compositions suitable for the fluorescent screen of a cathode ray tube.

    • A charge and discharge circuit and a battery pack, both capable of voluntarily perform proper switching between a charge operation and a discharge operation of a secondary battery according to various situations, are provided. The charge and discharge circuit of a secondary battery is one capable of charging the secondary battery E2 by a power source voltage and of supplying power from the secondary battery E2 to an external device 3. Then, the charge and discharge circuit includes a bidirectional regulator 10 capable of adjusting an output in both of a charge direction of feeding the current to the side of the secondary battery E2 and a discharge direction of feeding the current from the secondary battery E2 to the side of the external device 3, a charge and discharge detecting circuit 20 for detecting a direction of the current flowing in the secondary battery E2, and a switching control circuit 30 for switching the operation direction of the bidirectional regulator 10 based on the detection of the charge and discharge detecting circuit 20.
