    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new quality assurance method for preventing deterioration in the transmission quality in a single optical fiber caused by dispersion of a polarization mode, and to provide an optical fiber assured by the above assurance method.
      SOLUTION: The quality assurance method for an optical fiber is characterized in that: the birefringence of an optical fiber before processed into a cable is measured; and only an optical fiber showing a measurement value lower than a preliminarily determined reference value is selected to suppress the probability of inducing deterioration in the transmission quality caused by dispersion of a polarization mode in a transmission line after the fiber is processed into a cable.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-performance dispersion-shifted optical fiber that is more suitable for a long distance system or a multi-wavelength transmission incidental to a large capacity of the latest optical communication system and to a demand for long distance transmission. SOLUTION: The dispersion-shifted optical fiber has a refractive index profile composed of a center core, a step core and a clad, with a small diameter solution employed as a core diameter. Assuming that r1 is the radius of the center core, r2 is the radius of the step core, Δ1 is the relative refractive index difference of the center core with the refractive index of the clad as a reference, Δ2 is the relative refractive index difference of the step core, x is r2/r1 and y is Δ2/Δ1; 5.0≤x≤7.5, 0.14≤y≤0.18 and 0.8%≤Δ1≤1.2%.
