In various embodiments, an end effector having operable and closable jaws is attached to a distal end of an elongate shaft such that portions of the jaws are axially offset from the elongate shaft. Other jaw embodiments are coupled to an actuation arrangement that permits portions of the jaws to be moved out of axial alignment with the elongate shaft. Other jaw embodiments are configured to facilitate tissue dissection. Electrosurgical instruments are also disclosed. One embodiment employs a flexible electrode that is conformable to tissue.

摘要： Various embodiments are directed to a surgical instrument comprising, a shaft, and an end effector. The shaft may be coupled to the handle and may extend distally along an longitudinal axis. The end effector may be positioned at a distal end of the shaft and may comprise first and second jaw members, a reciprocating member, a shuttle and at least one cam pin. The first and second jaw members may define first and second longitudinal slots and first and second cam slots and may be pivotable towards one another about a pivot point. The reciprocating member may be translatable distally and proximally parallel to the longitudinal axis and through the first and second longitudinal slots. A distal portion of the reciprocating member may define a blade. The shuttle may be translatable distally and proximally parallel to the longitudinal axis. The cam pin may be coupled to the shuttle and positioned within the first cam slot and the second cam slots.

摘要： An educational game for teaching children how to read music by teaching them the locations of musical notes on a musical staff. The game which may be played by two or more players includes a game mat having a flat playing surface with musical clef and staff indicia depicted thereon, and a means for selecting musical notes such as playing cards or a spinner type indicator having the musical notes printed thereon. The game is played by one player selecting a musical note by choosing a card from the deck of playing cards or spinning the spinner. Once a musical note has been selected, the player selecting the musical note communicates the musical note to the other players who are standing along one side of the game mat. The players standing along side the game mat quickly locate and stand on all of the musical note positions within the lines and spaces of the musical staff depicted on the game mat. The player who correctly locates and stands on the most musical note positions generally wins the game. A time piece indicator may be used to limit the amount of time the players have for locating and standing on all of the musical note positions on the musical staff game mat.

摘要： A tissue thickness compensator comprising a first compensation layer, a second compensation layer, and a pocket situated between the compensation layers can be positioned in the end effector of a surgical instrument. A fastener cartridge positioned in the end effector can comprise a fastener moveable between an initial position and a fired position. When the fastener is moved from the initial position to the fired position, the fastener can move through the pocket and can compress a portion of the tissue thickness compensator. A support can be positioned between the first and second compensation layers. When the fastener compresses the tissue thickness compensator, at least one of the support, first compensation layer and second compensation layer can be deformed. The tissue thickness compensator can also comprise a tab and/or a limiting plate to control deformation of the compensation layers and/or the support.

摘要： A surgical instrument can comprise an end effector including a plurality of jaws which can be configured to compress tissue therebetween. The end effector can further comprise one or more electrodes which can be configured to direct a flow of electrical current through the tissue in order to heat the tissue and denature collagen and/or other proteins within the tissue. As the tissue cools, the collagen and/or other proteins can renature and thereby seal the tissue. In certain embodiments, the end effector of the surgical instrument can further comprise movable portions which can apply a tension force to the tissue surrounding the tissue being sealed. In various circumstances, the tension force can reduce the over-denaturation, shrinkage, and/or other damage to the surrounding tissue caused by heat flowing from the end effector during the sealing process.

摘要： A biopsy device comprises a probe and a holster. The probe has a distally extending needle including a transverse tissue receiving aperture. A cutter is translatable relative to the needle to sever tissue protruding through the aperture. A thumbwheel is manually operable to rotate the needle to reorient the angular position of the aperture about the longitudinal axis defined by the needle. The thumbwheel is positioned obliquely with the longitudinal axis. A cable driven mechanism in the holster drives the cutter. A rotatable tissue sample holder is coupled with the probe, and has chambers configured to receive tissue samples communicated proximally through a lumen defined by the cutter. A piezoelectric motor in the holster drives the tissue sample holder.

The first and/or second tissue thickness compensators may include additional engagement features, such as a raised ridge that engages a slot in the anvil and/or the staple cartridge. An end effector assembly may be provided for attachment to a surgical instrument that includes, for example, a staple cartridge, an anvil, a first tissue thickness compensator positioned on the anvil, and a second tissue thickness compensator positioned on the staple cartridge.

摘要： A tissue retrieval device includes a tubular member, an expandable member, and a tissue retrieval bag. The introducer tube is sized to be inserted into a patient through a trocar. The bag may be selectively opened by the expandable member within the patient. The bag may receive a tissue specimen and be withdrawn from the patient. The bag may be manipulated for packing within the tubular member in a variety of ways. Manipulation of the bag may include folding the bag about axes that are perpendicular to or parallel to the tubular member; rolling the bag about axes that are perpendicular to or parallel to the tubular member; or wrapping the bag about the expandable member, wrapping the bag about a rod, or twisting the bag at a position distal to the expandable member. The tubular member may comprise an environmentally responsive capsule.
