    • PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for controlling the velocity of a roll based on the shape of a rolling material is provided to prevent defects of the rolling material and damage of facility due to rolling plate facing upward and downward by controlling the velocity of the rolling roll based on bending of the front end part of the rolling plate during hot rolling, thereby securing flatness of the rolling material. CONSTITUTION: The method for controlling the velocity of a roll based on the shape of a rolling material comprises first step (71) of measuring the shape of the front end part of a rolling material; second step (72) of calculating a velocity difference between upper and lower rolls (dv1) during unloading, a velocity difference during loading (dv2) and a velocity difference maintenance time during loading (dt) based on the shape of the front end part; third step (73) of instructing an unloading upper roll velocity (Vtop1) and a lower roll velocity (Vbot1); fourth step (74,75) switching off a relay (L1) of a balance circuit part during the velocity difference maintenance time during loading (dt) and instructing the upper roll velocity (Vtop2) and the lower roll velocity (Vbot2) when loading is judged by detecting a moment (t0) that a plate is entered; and fifth step (76) of concurring the velocity of upper and lower rolls by switching on a relay (L1) of the balance circuit part when the velocity difference maintenance time (dt) is elapsed.
