    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a mobile communication system and a corresponding network element that reduces latency due to high network load.
      SOLUTION: The method to be carried out by a base station (NodeB) of a mobile communication network, which is connected to a core network and is operable in normal mode and in direct mode, comprises: a step (510) of detecting a request originating from a first user equipment (UE1) to communicate with a second user equipment (UE2) with the first user equipment (UE1) in direct reach of the base station (NodeB); a step (520) of establishing a communication link between the first and the second user equipment (UE1 and UE2); a step (530) of checking if the second user equipment (UE2) is also within direct reach of the base station (NodeB); a step (550) of operating the communication link in the direct mode when it is so; and a step (540) of operating the communication link in the normal mode otherwise.
