Actuating by pulsating fluid pressure; leveractuated pumps; stroke, varying; diaphragm and flexible-chamber pumps; multiple-delivery piston pumps.-Fuel is supplied to internalcombustion engines by engine-driven diaphragm or reciprocating-plunger pumps corresponding in number to the cylinders of the engine, the pumps delivering fuel to mixing-chambers, whence the mixture passes to the cylinders. The pumps are actuated by adjustable conical cams b on a half-speed shaft a, and are provided with foot valves h and head valves i and deliver into mixing-chambers m. The plunger pumps, the barrels of which are formed in the casting f, are provided with an oil seal g. According to the Provisional Specification, the pumps may be actuated by the engine exhaust and may consist of two spring-loaded tubes one of which is telescoped within the other, the whole being submerged in the fuel.

June Roasting furnaces; baffles.-An annular roasting-furnace with a rotary hearth is divided into two concentric chambers by a circular baffle depending from the roof. The hearth C is carried by a framework B supported on roller bearings D and rotated by a pinion E. Sand or like seals F, F at the sides prevent the escape of the hot gases and the entry of cold air. The roasting- chamber is divided into two parts by a baffle J extending from the roof nearly to the hearth, the inner chamber acting as a muffle for the preliminary heating of the materials, while the products of combustion from the furnaces pass through the outer chamber. Adjustable rabbles are fitted at a suitable point, and an extra rabble is provided to heap the materials against the baffle and thus prevent the entry of the products of combustion into the inner chamber. Swing doors are provided in the gap in which the rabbles are placed. The roof of the furnace may be constructed as shown or may be supported by a ring suspended from overhead girders. The central portion of the furnace may be used as a drying- floor.
