[Class 39 (i)] A high-pressure lamp contains a mixture of mercury and another vaporizable material such as cadmium, the mercury only being entirely vaporized and the unevaporated portion of the other material acting as the cathode of the lamp. Preferably the material is contained in a pocket 3, Fig. 1, in a metallic cap 2 sealed to each end of the lamp. Cooling fins 4 may be provided on the cap. The cap itself or projections from it may act as anodes. An annular metallic ring may be sealed in the tube in front of the cathode to prevent sputtering and blackening and to act as a starting electrode or grid, Fig. 4 (not shown). In Fig. 3 a shield 6 projecting from the cap 2 protects the seal and prevents blackening. The material may also be contained in a cylinder 5, Fig. 5, and the tube drawn down and sealed to the outside, or to a flange projecting from the cylinder, Fig. 6 (not shown). In a tube surrounded by a vacuum jacket, the pockets may project through the wall of the jacket.

    • 433,789. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, and RUFF, H. R., Waverley, Overslade Lane, SCOTT, W. J., 16, Oval Road, Hillmorton Paddox, and DAVIES, L. J., 147, Murray Road, all in Rugby. Feb. 19, 1934, No. 5491. [Class 39 (i)] A discharge device has an inductive stabilizing reactance and a bimetallic thermostatic switch through which current passes to heat one of the electrodes, the thermostatic switch being arranged to be operated by heat conducted from the heated electrode when the desired electron - emitting temperature is reached, to initiate a high voltage surge in the stabilizing reactance which starts the discharge. As shown, a discharge lamp has two electrodes 2, 3, heated by the discharge during operation, electrode 2 being heated initially from the supply mains through an inductance (not shown), leads 4, 5, contacts 10, 8, a U-shaped bimetallic strip 7 and lead 6. When the electrode 2 reaches the desired temperature, heat conducted through the lead 6 operates the switch, separating contacts 8, 10 and interrupting the current through the electrode 2 and producing a voltage surge in the inductance to start the discharge. To prevent excessive bending of the strip 7 during operation of the device, a stop is provided, such as a glass sleeve 9 on a portion of the lead 5. The lamp may be enclosed in an evacuated envelope containing the switch.

    • 412,665. Light - - sensitive cells. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, RUFF, H. R., Waverley, Overslade Lane, and SCOTT, W. J., 22, Windsor Street, both in Rugby. Feb. 2, 1933, No. 3235. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (iii).] In a selenium, thallium-sulphide, photo-electric or photo-voltaic cell the leading-in wires are fused into an intermediate glass support so as to be partly embedded in its surface, and are made of platinum or of an iron-nickel alloy coated with copper and copper borate, which is capable of joining satisfactorily with glass. Thus two stout wires 4, made of one of the above metals, are bridged by a glass bead 5 so as to be partly embedded in its surface, which is then covered with light-sensitive material either before or after insertion into the glass vessel 3 ; in the latter case the layer is formed by distillation in vacuo. The leads 4 are fused into the pinch 12. In modifications, the leads 4 may be inter-digitated combs partly embedded in the surface of a glass plate (Fig. 3, not shown), or a pair of wires forming a spiral on the surface of a glass cylinder (Fig. 4, not shown).
