Heading E2A: A safety belt buckle comprises a belt tongue 14 having a latching surface 64, a base member 12 having a central web section 30 with a latch retainer 39 at one end thereof, a latch member 16 engaged with the latch retainer having a latching face 50 engageable with the latching surface of the belt tongue, the web section of the base member having a belt receiving opening 38 near the end thereof remote from retainer, a manual operater member 20 engageable with the latch member to effect disassociation thereof from the tongue and means 22 biassing the latch member to a position wherein the latching face thereof is engageable with the latching surface. In the construction shown the base member is generally channel shaped in transverse cross section and in addition to the web section 30 has a pair of spaced parallel flange sections 32 and 34 from which shoulder portions 36 and 37 extend laterally inwardly parallel to the web section 30. The latch member is formed with an opening 42 in one end portion thereof and the same end portion as a pair of spaced parallel longitudinally extending figures 44 and 46 which are engaged by an edge portion 100 of the operater member 20; the operater member 20 also has a pair. of spaced parallel downwardly extending sections 94 and 96 which bear against the upper side of the latch member 16. The operater member can be pivotted to disengage the latch member from the tongue by finger pressure through an opening in a cover member 18 which is secured to the base member one end of the operater member being disposed in an internal channel 142 of the cover member and pivotting on an edge of the channel. The biassing means 22 is a leaf spring which is clipped to the latching member and which has an upwardly extending section 80 which terminates in a downwardly inclined end section 82, the section 80 extending through the opening 42 in the latching member and being engageable with the lower side of the belt tongue 14. The latching member 16 is held in assembly with the base member by a spring 24 which is snapped in position between the flange sections 32 and 34. The cover member is held in position on the base member by means of a pair of tanks 150 and 152 formed in the end portions of the shoulder portions 36, 38 and which are received within the channel 142 of the member 18 an edge portion 138 of the cover is snapped over of said ends of the flange sections 32, 34 after the tanks 150 and 152 have been received in a channel 142 and recesses 146 and 148 of the edge portion 138 receive locking tab portions 154 and 156 formed on the shoulder portions 36, 38.
