    • 380,483. Coated sheet material. DU PONT CELLOPHANE CO., Inc., 2, Park Avenue, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Charch, W. H.; Elliott Apartments, Linwood Street, Buffalo, New York, U.S.A.) June 16, 1931, No. 17462. Convention date, June 17, 1930. [Class 140.] Transparent sheet material such as sheets or films of regenerated cellulose or cellulose derivative, or sheets or films of albuminous material are coated with a composition free from cellulose derivatives and comprising a resin and a wax or a wax-like substance in such proportions as to render the coating moisture proof and to provide a non-tacky, non-greasy, and transparent material. The composition may also contain a plasticizer. The resin may be a natural or synthetic resin or mixture of resins ; resins prepared from vinyl derivatives, modified polyhydric alcoholpolybasic acid resins, and resins produced from chlorinated diphenyl may be used. The wax is preferably paraffin wax, but Japan wax, spermaceti, ceresin wax, beeswax, petroleum jelly, and stearin may be used. The plasticizer may be tricresyl phosphate, castor oil, dibutyl phthalate or other known material. In general, the weight of resin exceeds the weight of wax or plasticizer alone ; the proportion of wax necessary to produce a coating of the desired properties is not large ; generally a weight of less than one-third that of the resin is sufficient. Solvents may be used to produce the composition, or the ingredients may be melted together. The composition may be applied to the sheet material in any manner, and the coated material is dried, preferably at a temperature equal to or above the melting point of the wax. After drying, the material is preferably humidified. In examples: (1) 15 parts by weight of a polymerized product made from vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, 3 parts of paraffin wax, and 7 parts of tricresy1 phosphate are dissolved in toluene, and sheets of regenerated cellulose immersed therein. (2) A composition comprising a resin prepared from glycerin, phthalic anhydride, rosin and chinawood oil acid, paraffin wax, and castor oil is prepared and used as in the previous example. (3) A composition as in (2) with the addition of gum damar. (4) A composition comprises diphenyl resin and paraffin wax. (5) Composition as in (4) but containing castor oil in addition. Other compositions contain: (6) polymerized metastyrene, paraffin wax, and tricresyl phosphate. (7) Gum mastic, paraffin wax, and toluene. (8) Gum mastic, paraffin wax, ethyl abietate, and toluene. (9) Gum mastic, beeswax, paraffin wax, and toluene. (10) Diphenyl resin, lanolin, paraffin wax, and toluene.
