    • 1311. Davies, J., and Davies, D. Jan. 19. Mechanical systems, automatic and non - automatic ; track apparatus for stopping trains and actuating signals on trains and other than on trains ; miniature signals ; audible signals.- The throttle valve and bells and miniature signals on the locomotive are operated mechanically by the contact of pivoted levers with laterally-sliding track contacts. Electric lamps in the cabin indicate when track ramps are in 'danger' position and when a train is standing over the ramp. A bell is rung mechanically when a train reaches the 'home' signal ramp. The treadles are replaced by the signalman or automatically when the train passes a supplementary treadle. The train carries two pairs of pivoted levers a, a', which engage the track obstacles 1, 2, according to their position on the track. The ramp 1 lifts the levers on the engine to greater extent than the ramp 2. When the ramps are in clear position, the lever a, acting through suitable connexions rocks the shaft B on the engine and by means of a crank engaging the slotted link n and lifting the sector s to position in front of a slight opening. At the 'home' signal the lever a is lifted further so as to expose the sector s . At each ramp, a rack-driven bell t on the engine is sounded by the movement of the shaft B, and at the ramp 1, the lever 9, pivoted to the ramp, is depressed, and a bell on the track struck by a hammer actuated by the plate 10. For a ' danger' signal the lever a is actuated, a valve in the steam pipe is closed, the bell t is rung, and the signals s , s are closed. Projections y, y on each sector release the trigger o to permit the return of the other sector to normal. A block 24 slides in a slot in the ramp 1 and closes one of two switches in the circuit of signal lamps in the cabin ; when the ramp is set at 'danger,' the block 24 is in position 24 ; as a train depresses the lever 9, the bell-crank 28 slides the block to position 46 to energize a red lamp. The arm of the bell-crank is in two parts, hinged together so as to be out of action when the ramp is at ' clear.' The block 24 is reset, as the ramp goes to 'clear,' by a fixed bar 25. At the same time, the slotted link 49 attached to the ramp allows a spring-driven sector 29 to rotate and operate the bell hammer 54. The teeth of the sector 29 are spaced apart or masked by a plate 55 so as to give a distinctive series of strikes on the bell. The ramps are set at 'danger' by the depression of the lever 12 by the lever a on the locomotive, thereby depressing the link 13, and, through the bell-crank 14 and the rod 39, pulling the ramp 1, which moves in guide-slots in the baseplate, and is held at ' danger' by a bolt pin until, as the locomotive passes the next lever 12, a wire 22 releases the bolt, and allows a spring to re-set the ramps.
