    • A method for initiating telephone calls from a mobile device which operates in a wireless communication network, including: displaying text on a visual display of the mobile device; moving a position marker on the visual display throughout the displayed text in response to a navigational input by a user to the mobile device; monitoring for a predetermined user input to the mobile device and upon detecting the predetermined user input causing a list of user selectable functions to be displayed on the visual display; determining if the position marker is located within a non-hyperlinked number string in the displayed text when the predetermined user input is detected and if so, causing the displayed list of user selectable functions to include a telephone call function for initiating a telephone call to the non-hyperlinked number string; and causing, if a user selects from the list of functions the initiate a telephone call function, a telephone call to the non-hyperlinked number string to be initiated through the wireless communications network.

    • A system includes a central program store location having a memory storing a plurality of application programs and a plurality of identifiers. Each of at least some of the identifiers are associated with at least one of the programs. A communication network, such as the Internet, connects the program store location and the host system. A communication channel connects the host system and a target system. A loader routine is adapted to execute at the host system, communicate with the program store location through the Internet, communicate with the target system through the communication channel and receive an identifier as a received identifier. The loader routine employs the identifiers from the program store location and the received identifier to select one program for download from the program store location to the host system. The loader routine then downloads the selected program from the host system to the target system.

    • A mobile device enables communication over a wireless communication network between the user of the mobile device and a correspondent. The mobile device includes a display having a plurality of display modes including a folder view display mode wherein a plurality of folders are viewable. An input device is operable to change the display mode of the display between the folder view display mode and other display modes. A memory within the mobile device stores a user selected folder selected from the plurality of folders. A processor controls the operation of the mobile device such that after the user selected folder is stored in memory, when the input device is operated to change the display mode of the display to the folder view display mode, the user selected folder is automatically displayed on the display.

    • A method and apparatus for controlling the display of a portable electronic device having a camera application, a viewfinder having at least two viewfinder resolutions, and a sensor array, is provided. When a zoom level of the camera application is 1×, a first image is generated by scaling a predetermined number of rows and columns of pixels of the sensor array to a first viewfinder resolution at a given frame rate. When the zoom level is greater than 1×, a region of interest of the predetermined number of rows and columns of pixels is cropped in accordance with the zoom level and a second image is generated by scaling the cropped region of interest to a second viewfinder resolution smaller than the first viewfinder resolution at a frame rate higher than the given frame rate.
