    • A position servo system exemplified by a power-assisted steering system in which a power-driven continously-variable-ratio transmission ("CVT") of the variable-ratio-epicyclic type, and particularly of the toroidal-race rolling-traction type, is arranged coaxially with the wheel or other rotary actuating member (3) and the steering or the driven mechanism, and delivers an output to augment the steering effort in response to an error between the positions of the actuating member and the steering mechanism. Means (50, 51) are described to prevent interference with the normal manual connection between the actuating member and the steering mechanism should the CVT cease to rotate, and on occasions when the normal sense of operation is reversed and the steering mechanism tends to steer the actuating member. Means are also described, where the CVT is of the toroidal-race type, to ensure equality between the forces exerted on the steering mechanism by all its connections with the CVT.

    • A hydraulic control system for a continuously-variable-ratio-vehicle transmission of the toroidal-race rolling-traction type, in which the mechanism for positioning each roller includes a double-acting ram (11). The two opposed faces of the ram are exposed in normal use to the pressures of two separate lines of fluid (21, 23), each being pressure-controlled by separate valves (32, 34) located downstream of the respective ram face. The outputs of those separate valves combine in a common region (31), and further valve means (40, 41) open to connect that region to each line in response to the occurrence of a predetermined difference in pressure between the region and that line. In such circumstances such connection and the resulting transfer of fluid from the region to the line helps to counteract any tendency to fluid starvation in the line. This might otherwise occur for instance in response to the rapid movement of all the double-acting rams in the same direction, for example when the vehicle is approaching wheel-lock during emergency braking.

    • A transmission arrangement is disclosed which comprises first and second variators (166, 169) each of which comprises an input race (150, 154) and an output race (152, 156).
