The construction of the boot form (10) - particularly the lower portion (12) of the boot form (10) - may be varied across different size ranges by, for example, varying the fiber angles in the composite material. Varying the stiffness of the lower portion (12) of the boot form (10) in this manner allows the flexibility of different sized boots (5) to be substantially equalized. The skate quarter (22) and other skate-boot features may readily be attached to the upper portion (14) of the boot form (10) via stitching, rivets, or other connectors. The boot form (10) also may include an integral toe cap (26) having a flange (25) or other element to which the skate tongue (30) and other elements may be connected.

    • A protective sports helmet includes features that promote efficient fit adjustment and efficient donning and removal of the helmet. The helmet optionally includes a front shell portion pivotably connected to a rear shell portion to promote easy donning and removal of the helmet. Cam mechanisms optionally are provided on the helmet shell for securing straps of a chin cup at desired lengths.     • A ball bat includes a barrel having one or more integral features for selectively stiffening regions of the barrel. The barrel may include an indented region forming a rib projecting inwardly into the barrel. Alternatively, one or more inwardly projecting lips may be formed on adjoining barrel sections that are bonded, welded, or otherwise attached to each other, such that an integral, internal rib is formed in the barrel. The internal rib stiffens the barrel, thus reducing the barrel's BBCOR. One or more integral ribs may be provided at any desired barrel locations for selectively limiting the barrel's performance without appreciably increasing the moment of inertia of the ball bat. In another embodiment, a joint, to which two barrel sections are bonded, welded, or otherwise attached, includes an inwardly projecting member that stiffens the barrel, thus reducing the barrel's BBCOR.
