[Also in Group VII] A shoe upper comprises two or more wall members 11, 12, 14, Fig. 3, secured together at 13, 15 by cemented turned-out flanges abutting flesh-to-flesh and afterwards secured at their lasting margins to an inner or outer sole by a cemented out-, or in-turned flange, each flange being of uniform depth throughout its length. The free edges 18 of the upper may be turned over on themselves and cemented in position. The shoe parts may be assemb'ed on a last and the cement-coated flanges pressed together over their full depth and length by a multi-part mould against a sole member. The parts of the mould may be so constructed as simultaneously to emboss a pattern on the flanges. Alternatively, the edgesto be cemented together may be coated with a thermo-setting cement applied by one of a pair of rollers, Figs. 1, 2, to a pre-determined depth from the edge, and the rollers which may be heated, may form by raised lines 6 and an interrupter rib 7, an embossed pattern such as stitch marking on the out-turned flange of the upper. A sole and heel unit may be attached to the upper by conventional means and fastening means such as a decorative lace and cemented tags provided.

    • 612,411. Sandals. BRITISH BATA SHOE CO.. Ltd., and TUSA, J. July 25, 1944, No. 14187. [Class 17(ii)] The straps forming the upper of a sandal are seamed between the rubber, or rubberlike plastic sole and insole by stitches and an adjustable centre strap slidable on the vamp straps is free at the toe of the sandal so as to leave the vamp straps free. The straps 4, 5, 6, 8 and the insole 3 are assembled with the sole and secured together by stitching 21 extending through the sole 1 from a channel formed in the bottom surface. A centre strap 7 is slotted longitudinally to slide on the vamp straps leaving the toe free. The back strap 8 is preferably reinforced by attaching it to the insole 3 by rivets 18, and ankle straps 9 slide on it. A filler 24, shaped to fit closely around the strap ends, levels the underpart of the insole before the application of the sole. In a modification, the enlarged strap ends 4A &c. are passed through slots 24 in the insole shoulders 4B &c., on the straps holding the straps in the required position. The sole 1 and heel 2 may be pressed together and vulcanized to form an integral unit. Specification 564,960 is referred to.
