    • Apparatus for unloading articles, such as luggage, from containers while the containers are being conveyed through an unloading station. The containers have one or more shelves on which the articles may be placed and also have a side which may be folded back over the top of the container and out of the way. These containers are carried on dollies which have upper surfaces which may be tilted transversely to their direction of motion as they pass through the unloading station, thereby tilting the containers and tending to cause the articles to slide from their shelves. The unloading station includes one or more pivotable retaining doors and means for causing the dollies to pass through the unloading station in close lateral register with the retaining doors, so that the retaining doors keep the articles from sliding from the containers before it is desired that they should. The unloading station also includes one or more downwardly sloping chutes positioned immediately downstream of the retaining doors so that the articles in the containers will slide into the chutes as the containers pass beyond the retaining doors.

    • 24,359. Knapp, W. F. Oct. 20. Transferring articles to or from trains in motion. - A mail-bag exchanging-device comprises train and station apparatus. The train apparatus consists of a centrally pivoted tilting bar which picks up a bag on one side and drops a bag off the other side; it is shown in position for the exchange in Fig. 1, and after the exchange in Fig. 4, the train being supposed to be moving in the direction shown by the arrow C. The mail-bag 71 rests in jaws 77, 78 carried by hangers 40, 33 from a bar 5, which is swung out from the train, and is locked in position by two pins, a hook, and a stay. The hanger 33 is pivoted to the bar 5, and the hanger 40 is pivoted to a Z-bracket 43, which is normally locked on the bar 5 by a pawl and ratchetwheel 51, 49. The parts are held in the inclined position shown in Fig. 1 by a finger 46, pivoted to a disk 45, which abuts against the hanger 33 until struck by a lever on the station post. When this occurs, the hangers are displaced to the position shown in Fig. 4. The bar 37 tilts, drops off the bag 71 and picks up the station bag, the parts being locked in the new position by a pawl 58, on the bracket 43, which engages teeth 61 on the hanger 33, and a latch 62 on the hanger 33, which engages teeth 65 on the bracket 43. In case of these pawls failing to act, a pin 55 strikes the latch 62 and releases the pawl 51, so that the whole device swings freely on the bar 5. To employ the device when the train is travelling in the opposite direction to the arrow C, the disk 45 is turned until the finger 46 abuts against the hanger 40; the latch 62 is locked out of action, and a latch 67 on the hanger 40 is released to engage with the teeth 68 of the bracket 43 so as to lock the parts in position after the exchange of bags. In this case, the pawl 51 cannot be released, and any shock is taken up by a buffer E. The jaw members 72, 73 are spring connected to the hangers and act as buffers when bags are caught. A modified form of apparatus is shown in Fig. 16, in which the parts are released for tilting when a finger 115 strikes a lever on the track, which releases a catch 96 engaging the bracket 43 and allows the parts to assume the position shown in dotted lines. Where the car opening is narrow, the bar 5 may be detached from its pivot and swung in on a short pivoted arm. The station device, Fig. 9, comprises a support 121 pivoted at 122 to a post 123 and held by an adjustable hook 125 so that the height of the working end can be varied. The bag to be delivered is placed on raised sides 133 of a reversible bottom plate 132. A spring- controlled striker 90 hits the finger 46 or 115 on the train device, the bag on the sides 133 is picked up, and the train bag is dropped on to the hook 135. Two fingers 90 are provided so that exchange may be effected with trains moving in both directions.
