    • The invention relates to a method of improving connection quality and system capacity in a cellular radio system. Each cell in the cellular radio system comprises at least one base station (BS) communicating with subscriber terminals (MS) in its area. The method of the invention is characterized in that the subscriber terminal transmits in two time slots and receives in two time slots during one frame, and that the subscriber terminal employs the time slots of the frame following the frame used for transmission and reception for measuring neighbouring base stations. Owing to the method and cellular radio system of the invention, methods developed for improving connection quality and system capacity in a cellular radio system, such as frequency hopping, discontinuous transmission and power control, can be used on the traffic channels of the base station BCCH carrier wave frequency.

    • A system and method for determining the transmission rate of a data signal at a receiver of a variable rate communications system. A vocoder at a transmitter encodes a frame of data into symbols according to one of a set of discrete data rates. When the data rate is lower than the maximum, each symbol is repeated a number of times as required to achieve a constant number of symbols in each frame. The data signal is transmitted at a power proportional to the data rate of the frame. A reference signal is also transmitted. The reference signal is transmitted at a constant power. Further, the data signal has the same carrier frequency as a reference signal so that they exhibit the same fading characteristics as they are transmitted through the channel. At a receiver, the power of the reference signal is measured by the pilot measurement element (36) and the power of the data signal is measured by the traffic power measurement element (38). The rate processor (46) dtermines the ratio of the power of the data signal to the power of the reference signal, and the measured ratio is compared with a predetermined ratio of the power of a maximum rate data signal to the power of the reference signal. The result of the comparison will indicate the encoded data rate of the received frame of data. The decoder (40) then uses the rate indicated by the comparison to properly decode the frame of data. A vocoder at the receiver further processes the data for interface with the user.

    • Variances in bandwidth used by a radiocommunication connection are adapted to by changing the type of information being transmitted. For example, in a TDMA environment, a first downlink time slot associated with a double- or triple-rate connection may have a first format, while a second time slot associated with the same connection may have a second format different from the first format. Bandwidth in the second (or third) time slot can be used to carry information in a fast out-of-band channel (FOC). The FOC may provide information relating to the same connection as the payload or data field in that time slot, e.g., a service type identifier which informs the mobile or base station of the type of information (e.g., voice, video or data) being conveyed in the payload. Alternatively, the FOC information may be associated with a connection or connections which are different from that supported by the payload or data field containing the FOC.

    • A communications system is disclosed comprising a plurality of mobile stations and an improved base station for receiving signals from said mobile stations and decoding information-bearing signals transmitted therefrom. An antenna comprising antenna elements disposed around a support structure receives signals transmitted from the plurality of mobile stations and generates output signals from each antenna element. Convertors amplify, filter and convert signals from each of the antenna elements into a corresponding number of converted signals for processing. Storage devices temporarily store a number of samples of the converted signals. Processors iteratively process and reprocess the stored samples successively to decode the information from each of the mobile stations in turn. The processing provided by the processors identifies from the stored samples an information symbol transmitted by one of the mobile stations thereby decoding the information-bearing signal, and subtracts values dependent on the identified information symbol from the stored samples thereby reducing interference between the just-decoded signal and the signal to be decoded at a subsequent iteration.

    • A system and method for reducing radio frequency interference arising in connection with pulsed transmission over time division multiplexed communication channels. In a first embodiment, a subscriber station (300) is nominally assigned all of the slots (TN0-TN7) of each frame of a first transmit channel (R0). By transmitting RF energy substantially continuously, the subscriber station reduces interference arising from pulsed transmission. In a second embodiment, a subscriber station (300) is nominally assigned one or more slots (TN0-TN7) of each frame of a primary channel (R0) for conventional transmission of useful information, and is also instructed to continuously transmit RF energy over an auxiliary channel (R1) at times other than during the assigned primary channel slots. In this way, interference generated in the vicinity of the subscriber station (300) is reduced due to the substantially continuous transmission of RF energy by the subscriber station (300). More than one subscriber station (300) may simultaneously utilize the auxiliary channel (R1) during reduced interference mode operation.
